Now that my peas have come and gone (they were yummy) I thought I might plant okra in that space since it gets good light and has a trellis already in place.

Is it too late to put in a few plants?

Kosh, no, it is not too late to plant okra. In fact, most of us have late gardens this year due to the weird weather...many, myself included have had to replant. My okra is just now about 2 inches tall. We have a long growing season, so it would have plenty of time to mature.

Why do you need a trellis for okra? It's self supporting plants already. Do you soak your seeds overnight for a quicker germination? I do, it softens that hard outter shell.

Go for it, and enjoy.

OIC. I've never done okra before so I thought it might need supports.
I plan to get a few plants at the Farmers Market today, not seeds.

Thanks!

Sorry for such a tardy response....

The okra did fine, it kept producing well into october. Now I know what to do next year which is to plant about thrice as much as I did this year and we'll have plenty to harvest and eat.

ps getting ready to order onions from dixondale farms.

Kosh, I'm glad you enjoyed the okra. Okra loves hot & dry, so you should have had a bumper crop this year.
