We have a holly at each corner of the front of the house that the builders put in. One of the hollies has really grown to about 10 ft tall, while the other looks stunted at around 4 ft or so. DH and I saw a beautiful Japanese maple at Lowes today. It was a good size and a great price and we were tempted to get it and put it in the stunted hollies place. That side gets afternoon shade, while the holly on the other side gets more sun (probably why it's so big).
Do the two sides have the match? That is the question. What do you think? This message has been edited. Last edited by: theoriginalfluffy,
no, of course the two sides don't have to match. you can plant whatever you like. but, as far as putting a tree next to your house, I'd rethink it. 1). you don't want roots trying to go under your foundation. 2.) the tree will probably get taller than your roof, & you will end up with broken branches on your roof. on the plus side is I guess you will have shade from the tree on that end of the house. but, do consider how big the roots will get when you plant it. on another note, how in the world did your posted picture get so big? most people won't be able to answer you because the picture takes up your whole post area. is there any way you can shrink it down to the size most people use? I have my screen down to the smallest I can still see it, & your picture takes up my whole screen.

Oh my, I don't know why my avatar was so big! It's the little flower that is below my name and I didn't change anything to make it that large. I had to go in and click "hide avatar" but I'm not sure how to put in a new one yet.
I'm going to post later. I have to run right now! This message has been edited. Last edited by: theoriginalfluffy,
Thanks for your reply aggiegrad. I think I'm just going to keep the holly there because I like the symetry, and there is another tree not too far from that and I don't think it will look right. I have another spot that would be perfect for the maple but for one, the power lines run right through there and two, the kids play basketball close by and will wreck the tree. Oh well!
There's been problems on the HGTV forums all week. When individual pictures are used, the file size has to be reduced way down in order for them to be the right size.
And, your avatar is still showing up humongous on my screen. So big, in fact, that I can't even begin to see the picture you posted.
Sure wish admin would get things straightened out. It's weird how things could show so big, cause anything over 150K for pictures gets a "too big" message -- or at least they used to!!
Well this isn't even a picture that I just posted. It's the pic that has been under my screen name now for quite some time now. Maybe a year. All of the sudden, it's showing up huge when it's always been the size of a dime. Weird!
