| It seems to be that if the cans will naturally rust and you'll have drainage holes, you might want to add some kind of catch basin under them or at least some type of wrap (maybe in a pretty color?) with some type of edge setup (maybe small dowels, pencils, etc.) from which you could empty the drainage after they had time to drain, just to protect your window sill paint. Otherwise, I think it's an adorable idea for small herb plants.
