Just saw this idea and never would have thought to do that with old spice cans. It would be nice for a kitchen ledge or something

Will look pretty as they grow! I have seen that too! Like plants in old coffee cans or sugar tins. Just add drainage holes & your good to go!

That is such a cute idea......have seen similar things before. Herbs come to mind, growing on a window ledge.

Thumbie, yes, the tins will rust.....so if you're a collector, you wouldn't want to use your collectables.

It seems to be that if the cans will naturally rust and you'll have drainage holes, you might want to add some kind of catch basin under them or at least some type of wrap (maybe in a pretty color?) with some type of edge setup (maybe small dowels, pencils, etc.) from which you could empty the drainage after they had time to drain, just to protect your window sill paint. Otherwise, I think it's an adorable idea for small herb plants.
