Today, while we were in a wilderness area we frequent, I found what looked to me like chestnut burrs. I didn't have my camera, so I couldn't take a picture of the surrounding trees, but I did bring home one of the burrs.

Here's the thing: I've read that where we were, in the Pacific NW, there are no wild chestnut trees. So...what do you think? Is it a burr from a chestnut tree? Or could the burr be from some other plant/tree?

No clue here, as we are on the northeast coast. Be interested in finding out what it is. Hope someone can ID it for you.

I should probably tell you how big it is, too.
The half I have measures an inch across. I notice that the inside isn't concave, as if a nut was in it. Hmm...

I'd never heard of a Chinquapin; had to look that one up! Thanks, ladies! I'm excited to find the tree and try to harvest some of its nuts later in the year!
