Can you help my friend and I identify this beautiful vine? She found it at her cabin property on a river. She'd never seen it before and wondered what it was & perhaps if it likes to appear when there is a drought. And she said the whole cluster of flowers is no bigger than a 50 cent piece.

Are you sure it's a vine? It looks surrounded by vinca which is common but has blue/purple flowers in spring. this is SO pretty. I wish I could help. I'm sure someone will know... Here's a pic of the vinca in the sunshine. The leaves are usually darker.

Yes, its a vine. Those are the vine leaves, spaced pretty far apart. If you look along the 'string' of vine, there are more buds on it. The blossoms remind me a bit of the pea family.

That is very pretty...and I did a google search for wild sweet pea vine. It looks like that to me too. I found this image on Google. They look the same, but all the info I could find was invasive weed. What do you think? ve
Oooo ve, that's very close. I'll do some more checking, thanks. They don't seem to be invasive by the river...this year is the 1st time that my friend has seen them.
I did a bit more checking & I think it IS a wild sweet pea vine. The color on this one is simply gorgeous. This message has been edited. Last edited by: mgt,

I think it's done blooming. She took the pic earlier, not quite sure when. I was hoping she could show me the vine when I was there on Sat., but she got more visitors & I didn't want to ask again.

Well, heck. I thought I replied to this post. I don't know what it is, but its native to my wild area. Spreads right along the ground, only a couple of inches high. I'll keep looking to see if I can get an ID on it.

Dang, Muddy. That is an awesome find. I'll research that, too. The research I've done on the wild sweet pea shows the flowers as pink shades...not this reddish pink. You may have something there...going to check it out. Thanks. I may need to get some of those from FFG.
Did a bit more research...Muddy, how the heck did you come up with that GroundNut vine? I do believe that's it. Apios Americana. This message has been edited. Last edited by: mgt,

I don't recall but kept looking under wetlands, moist soil, vines & so forth! I will have to look for them on my walks in the parks. Roast some up! Hahaaa
They do sound tasty don't they? I'll tell my friend that my garden buddies ID'd the plant for her. She wasn't at work today, but I'll let her know ASAP.
Thank you everyone.
