I know I asked this about 2 weeks ago and I was told I was too impatient (whic I already know). But, to me, there's definately something going on here. The roses were pruned on March 23 and barely have any new growth at all. The 'Double Delight' and my 'Knockout' are doing fine. They both have new growth and even some buds. Three of the hybris teas (all from Walmart) 'Peak Performance', 'Chicago Peace' and 'Pascali' all look terrible. I also noticed some small holes in the ends of the stems.
Can anyone tell me if these look normal for roses in the middle of May? Happily married and mom of 4 Central maryland - Zone 7 |

Here's the picture of the stems

I forgot to mention, they were ALL fertilized with alfalfa tea at the time of pruning, as well as a second dose of Bayer 3 in 1 about 2 weeks ago.
This is a picture of my Knockout. It's doing great and is right next to the other ones that are doing terrible. Happily married and mom of 4 Central maryland - Zone 7 |

When did you plant them? I have three hybrid teas and they have not been the best growers for me....just OK...I am contimplating pulling them out and planting shrub roses instead. I think hybrid teas are over-rated. Mine have been in the ground for over three years and this year they actually look halfway decent. I think they may be slow to get established or something.
The first picture looks like a lot of dead wood and the second picture is definately dead wood. I would finish cutting all the dead wood off. That may stimulate what's left to put out new growth. When you start seeing some more growth, I would give them another shot of alfalfa tea or compost tea. |

You need to remove all the dead canes...and the one with the hole is from Cane Borers..I had several roses that started much Later than my others and looked just as bare until a month ago..while all the others were full of new leaves and blooming like crazy...if you see green..there is always hope...Why didn't you keep pruning down until you saw green?..I thought we discussed that several weeks ago??...I'm confused hon..but what's new..LOL...Jeanne

Thanks for responding.
Jeanne - When I pruned them, the canes WERE green. It seems like they've started to decline and now a lot of them are brown and look dead. That's why I was confused. Well, I just went out there and trimmed off as much of the dead canes as I could (some were hard to get to without damaging the healthy ones). I'm hoping that will revive them. They ALL had some green on them, so I guess there's still hope. Oh, I did notice two small buds on the Knockout and my first bud on my 'Double Delight' that I planted last fall. One of the new bareroot ('Gertrude Jeckyl') has about 8-9 buds on it already. Those look wonderful, especially for being dead looking sticks 1 1/2 months ago. This message has been edited.
