According to my Sunset Gardening book for Cytisus, broom,Fabaceae (Leguminosae), which they say is the group most widely planted brooms belong to, it needs full sun and little or no water once established. The plant you purchased could be an evergreen, semievergreen, or deciduous shrub. If your soil is highly alkaline give it iron sulfate.

If you have a Spanish broom the plant you have
Latin name is Spartium junceum and it is an evergreen. It also requires full sun and need little or no water. All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested.

I jst re-read my Sunset Gardening book. It states that Scotch Broom, C.scoparius, is an aggressive European species that has given all brooms a bad name.

thanks for that info still trying...I'll make sure that nobody eats it.
I do know it gets quite tall, so I will try and keep that in check. Thanks again
