It's August and I just don't feel like worrying anymore about all the flowers and veggies and how they're doing. Some of them are starting to turn yellow, or dying, and I am at the stage where I am just picking off the bad leaves. I don't feel like wasting my "Fungicide" on any container plants that I don't love and won't come back next year. Where I live, August is a terrible month. The flowers get tired and the bugs take over it seems to me. I only have a few more weeks to enjoy them so I will only worry about my shrubs now(I have many!) I sprayed the tomatoes the other day and now they're on their own. It's sink or swim time for them.
I will enjoy what's left of summer, but I am ready to move on..... I want to buy new fall shoes.....
DEFINITELY NOT LOOKING FORWARD TO WINTER HOWEVER! I would love a loooooonnng fall....

I think this time of the year, esp. with the type gardening year we've all had, that everyone is tired, the people and the plants.

I have given up on mine as well. The tomatoes have about quit producing, the cukes & squash are totally gone...only the purple hull peas are producing right now. In another week or so we will sow winter greens (turnips & mustard).

Keeping the shrubs and new trees alive has been the primary goal all summer long...flowers went sometime ago. Nope, not worrying about it at all.

Can I go shoe shopping with you? I love shoes. Unfortunately, I can't wear the kind I really love anymore, but that doesn't keep me from drooling whenever I see a real sexy pair with 3 inch heels

I am still watering my container plants but can tell you my heart is not in it. They are still beautiful even though the heat has been terrible. I have been having some serious health problems and am thinking about giving up gardening after this year. I can't take the heat. It just about ki lls me to go out for 10 minutes to water.

The containers are still ok because they have been watered consistently. But, almost all of the daylilies are done and I don't have a lot of perennials for the fall. We do water every day and keep spraying the daylilies and hostas to prevent the deer and the rabbits from eating all of them. This week it's cooler here but we have many more hot days to go.

owie, i am so sorry to hear you are not well. i hope you can scale way back but still be able to dabble in gardening just enough for your spirit's sake. but do take care of yourself.. that is priority #1. thoughts and prayers are coming your way for wellness.

my garden is starting to look tacky to me too. and i haven't even come thru a drought like you all have. well, sort of haven't. we don't get rain in the summer in CA so drought for us means no winter rains.

the daylily adventure was a huge disappointment. i'll move them in the fall to cluster them closer together in the short part of the 'L' bed.. and do something else in the long part. i'm thinking of a corn crop there next season. haha.. that would be a crop of maybe 12 plants. i know i'm done when i start thinking of how i want to do things different in the coming year. the waterfall corner and the sunflowers are the only parts i am still enjoying.

I'm on board with you all. I am tired of sweating & tired of watering pots. The flowers are also tired. This is an awful month to play outside. I am so looking forward to fall & planting some pansies.

The heat has just fried us this year and I let the planters go for a while too. Slowly redoing them and so far they are holding their own.

Owie, I am so sorry to learn of your health problems and wish you all the best for a speedy recovery. Don't even think about gardening if you aren't up to it. It IS labor intensive, that's for sure. You can always have fun with houseplants, propagating them for fun, etc.

I agree. I just don't have the time to water everyday (thanks to DH, he's been doing it) and forget about weeding and d e a d heading! I tend to get bored with the whole gardening thing half way through summer.

I suppose its because everything looks so beautiful in May and June and now it all sort of looks like c r a p. Potted plants are dying or not flowering, the grass is getting brown and all the perreniels have done their thing and look like sticks.

I'm up for that shoe shopping.

My attitude is that I'm not going outside for anything in this heat. Good thing it has been raining everyday, or most of my potted plants would be crispy. The middle courtyard looks like a jungle.

Everything is overgrown and weedy and is going to stay that way until the end of September when it cools off and I can get out and clean up, pull weeds, trim and feed plants and get ready for the holidays. I have a few things in pots to put in the ground too when it cools off.

I am hanging in there for the state fair.

I’m trying to decide who is nuttier everyone else and the animals or me.
The squirrels have become orange addicts and can’t wait for the fruit to ripen before eating the oranges. They consumed my entire last crop. I finally got the squirrels to stop eating my hibiscus flowers and roses. Now I have a neighbor’s goofy cat that is climbing through the rose bush and pyracantha. How can a cat do this with all the thorns in these plants?

I’m paying gardeners to help with the weeding, trim the bushes and mow the lawn. All they do is scalp the lawn and take out the trash cans. It’s in the hundreds and there won’t be any rain until late in the year. My water rates went up and we are on restrictions. I don’t like lawns where I live because they look out of place. I can’t think of what else to plant because there so many people with dogs that I don’t know what else would stand up to all the droppings and wee. I even have a dedicated trowel for cleaning up after people who don’t pick up after their dogs.

I know I'm tired of watering potted plants...and then the new things I have started but are sitting outside my garden house...those have to have the water dumped every time it rains...like almost daily! I need to get all of them in the ground.
As for veggies...my maters look pathetic & I may just pull them. I pulled all my onions the other day...some did good, some med. & lots of smaller ones. I even had a few that didn't make a bulb...those will get replanted!
My pepper plants are loaded. Getting just a few green beans every other day...hope for a mess tomorrow.

It will shortly be time for me to plant my fall/winter garden. Yesterday I planted 6 different varities of onion seeds...trying some new ones this year. I also planted seeds for 2 kinds of cabbage, broccoli & celery.
So I may be tired of it...but down here, it continues!

I think I'll save this thread and repost it in mid-January when we are all wishing for pots to water!

Good point. In January when it's cold, we will forget all about the heat and the watering. Isn't it amazing that everything seems possible In January, it's so easy to think that all the flowers will be beautiful and there won't be any weeds in the yard once summer comes along. hah hah hah, every year I order new stuff and have lots of dreams when I look at the magazines and flower catalogs.

You are so right. Come Jan. I will have the itch again.
