first instinct says above, but logic says below. wonder which is right. | |||

I think the logic is right. If it only rained a small amout but the float was at the 1/4" mark, that wouldn't be right...I don't think. UNLESS they have some how allowed for this when they calibrated the gauge. ~Jean~ in garden zone 6b | |||

Jean, LOL, my guess is 1 1/4 inch of rain. What was the level when you took the float out? Does the float displace water to make it higher? Where are our college-brained kids? ~Like sands through the hourglass ~So are the days of our lives | |||

Drum roll please...when I took the float out it the water level was exactly at 1 1/4" So, I read the top of the float. Whew, I'm gonna go take a nap. ~Jean~ in garden zone 6b | |||

So that is what's meant by a 'float' in a rain guage. It's to slow donwn evaporation; also, if common sense is included, the guage is calibrated to read with the float in place, so it reads 1 & 5/32". sts | ||||

Way too much math... but wouldn't it be around 1 and 9/32 inches since it's over the 1/4 line. LOL, my brain hurts. PS: how did you pick "32"? I always tell DH it's a line past the whatever mark and make him figure it all out. We DID get some more rain today but since the rain guage and I aren't on speaking terms right now, I didn't go out and look at it.  ~Jean~ in garden zone 6b | |||
