We are going to be hosting a demonstration on winter sowing for our gardening group this Saturday. I have no experience with it, but my friend convinced me to do it this coming winter, by looking at the over-100 milk jugs she made last January that are now FULL of lush perennials! (Only 5 of her jugs did not germinate!) The reason we are presenting it now, is to spur our members on to start collecting jugs and begin purchasing their seeds before supplies are exhausted. Once I saw what she did for literally pennies on the dollars I was spending for plants, I was hooked and hopefully others will be too! My question is, what online seed companies do you use? Someone mentioned Summer Hill Seeds on another thread, and of course, there is the ole' reliable Burpee's. Any others you use and your positive experiences with them, so I can pass along the word? Thanks!! Karen Zone 5b

Karen, I never order on line......I always buy my seeds locally at any garden center, Wal Mart, Dollar Store, Co-op, Home Depot, etc. You could also encourage them to save some of their own seeds to use...just about any plant that produces seeds would be a good candidate, esp. the annual ones. ve

Please tell us what you learn...but not til winter okay???That would be just plain depressing, if you know what I mean. There are no gardening mistakes, only experiments. Janet Kilburn Phillips

Here are some I have used and always get good seeds at reasonable prices... Pinetree Seeds Crosman Seeds Territorial Seed Co. Select Seeds Mountain Valley Seed Inc. Jung Seeds & PLants Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds and I just got some from a place...gotta find the invoice for the name.... Vermont Wildflower Farm Pinetree & Crosman have the cheapest prices but most of the packets have fewer seeds than other companies too...so remember that if you want a BUNCH of anything. Vera~~seems like our local stores just have the same ole' run of the mill seeds. I'd like to have things that I can't buy here, like astilbe, heuchera, unique columbine, etc. Things that will grow in shade are hard to find in seed form. Thanks for the suggestion, though!! Thumbie~~I will! I already have a neat little booklet she made up, but I'll try to snap some pictures as she is doing the class and fill you in nicely!! Karen~~OOOh, thanks for the wonderful sites! I'm going to get web addresses and hand them out to the ladies. And that last one sounds just right for me...I don't need 50 of the same plant, so the smaller packages would be best! Thanks, Ladies!!
