Just wondering if you folks help out with community gardening needs. For the past several years, 10 or so of us have gathered once a month at the grounds of one of our public buildings to address gardening needs. Mostly we prune and weed, but we've also relocated shrubs and small trees and planted bulbs and bushes. I always look forward to this, as we do share laughs, it offers some satisfaction, and one kind soul brings coffee and baked goods - providing additional motivation!

How about it? Anyone else digging with your neighbors?

Ricie - our garden club used to do this. We'd adopt an area, with city permission of course. We'd use plants dug from our own gardens. For the past few years the projects have fallen out of our agenda, mostly due to our unseasonable weather, heat & drought and our ages.

When we were younger, it was a lot of fun. Then it became work! Eek

used to volunteer out at Ft. Funston.. http://www.parksconservancy.or...es/fort-funston.html
pulling out ice plant that was crowding out the native vegetation. i came in as part of a meditation group but we worked with park rangers who designated what area we were to work in.

afterwards, our little group would have a silent tea ceremony... then open up conversation about sharing our experiences that morning. those were wonderful days with so many good memories. wish i could still do that, but alas age does not permit me getting up and down with ease like i used to.

thats why it is so important to have good memories in our memory bank.. so we can make withdrawals as we age and our abilities wan.

Bana, what good memories you have stored up! Sounds like you had a good group to work with and enjoy.

ve - What a great idea for Garden Clubs, and what a great way to share time, materials and talent. Hmmm...I might be looking for a garden club to join.

Bana - I know the area that you referenced. That terrain is all too familiar. Wink What a unique idea - pairing meditation with the gardening efforts. Super. Love that pic, too.

I'm just back from my monthly public gardening session. 8 of us showed up (including the coffee/pastry guy!). We weeded around the ferns, pruned Gunnera, and picked up after the pros took down a 20' palm tree. It apparently had a disease that was killing it from the top down.

Anyone else have any public gardening tales?

Gotcha.

I forgot to add that 2 of our mounted police came by as we were working. What beautiful horses!

Only once - LOL - does that tell you anything? My Dad wanted to try it for breakfast, so I took him. I wouldn't go back. What DH (and DS when he's here) prefer is the Seal Rock Inn for breakfast, in particular. To me, it's got an old SF feeling to it, they offer scratch made muffins, and lots of menu choices, parking is on site. Plus, from certain tables, you have an ocean view. Can't go wrong, IMHO.

When I was a bit younger (like 25 years ago!) I volunteered at the local Community Center. They had a program to help physically challenged seniors with their gardens and a few mentally challenged men did the work with the help and guidance of another volunteer and myself. I had a big van so drove everyone around. It was a lot of fun and really made a difference in everyone's life.

So true Bana! I've often said when unusual things have happened to me that it's just another story I can tell when I move to the retirement home! LOL I've had a varied life and have many, many good memories - and a few really strange ones!

thanks.. you have saved me from the Louis experience. i have eaten at Seal Rock Inn a few times & agree it does have that SF flavor.. and yes, they do make great muffins. i did not know about the on-site parking though. we usually park on the street.

there is a fun walk nearby, if you like that sort of thing. maybe you've already done it. turn off the Great Highway onto Balboa. you will see stairs on your left. take them up into Sutro Heights Park and you can come out the opposite corner, between the two lions statues, right at the Seal Rock Inn.

Lucky - What a great idea. I love that kind of inclusive activity. Today, we were supposed to have a group of special needs children join us for an hour of help, but they didn't make it. I never heard why. Perhaps it was a chaperone or parking issue.

Bana - Thank you for the tip. We do know that walk, as Spouse used to live at the end of Balboa. On a clear day...
