Flies! Sign In/Join

We've just recently moved into new home and have put sod and flower beds in the back yard. Now we've got a fly invasion!! We've tried spraying bug spray, fogging yard and using that "backyard barrier" spray that attaches to the hose, all to no avail.
Does anyone know how to rid your yard of hundreds (yes I mean hundreds!) of flies? They are making our yard unusable!
Thanks

Has it been rainy in your area? If so, that is why the flies are congregating near shelter. We have been rainy and have a huge influx right now too.
Also, if you have any kind of pet foods that sit outside, it will draw them...even dry foods.

You might try some of the old fly papers...they are sticky things that hang.
There is also a fly bait that some people use in their horse/cow barns...might try to locate some of that.

What you have been spraying will kill off any insects that can help keep those flies under control, but the key is to try to find where they come from. Fly larva, maggots, feed on decaying vegetative waste and animal manures so what is nearby that would be someplace they would find to be a really good nursery?

We've had rain, but they've been here for weeks - rain or shine -...I have dry dog food out but they're mostly in the grass, not even on the patio.

I'm going to a farm and garden shop tomorrow to see what they can recommend.

Thanks for replies.

Is there a woody area nearby where an animal carcass could be that the fly larva could be feeding on? Could there be a garbage dump nearby with exposed vegetative waste? Is there a dumpster nearby that has not been emptied in a while? These are all places, outside of yiour yard, where those flies could be coming from.

What kind of flies are they? House flies? Blue bottle flies? Green bottle flies? What do they look like?

Thanks for yall's help but the flies have moved on! I sprayed all around the yard with Hot Shot bug spray and it got rid of the pests!
I guess I might have bought some sod with fly eggs in it or something because I've never seen that many files in my life, much less all at one time in one yard!
I know now if they come back to break out the Hot Shot, that stuff really works

The active ingrediant in Hot Shot Flying Insect spray is permathrin a synthetic pyrethrin and it is a broad spectrum poison that kills off not only insect pests but any beneficials that contact it as well. Current research is telling us that many of the lower life forms, such as frogs and toads, are showing signs of genetic deformities as well as outright death because of the poisons we are spraying into our environment.
If these lower life forms are showing signs of genetic modification what are these poisons doing to our children?
