Do any of you have any suggestions on what I can use to clean the front of a brick fireplace (from soot) that is non-toxic. I know that TSP is commonly used, but I don't know how safe that is. Thanks.

TSP is actually very safe, it is just highly drying if you get a lot of skin contact, so wear protective gloves when using it dissolved in warm water with a scrub brush. Rinse with a spray bottle of clear water, and lots of old towels over plastic to protect the floor area from moisture.
Some have said Scrubbing Bubbles has also worked on cleaning the fireplace area. So you may want to try that too?

    Ditto what Conrad advised
BUT, I do have a question, why is your fireplace emitting smoke (soot) into the room?
