Someone at Whole Foods today told me Burt's was sold to Clorox...I suspect in their ongoing marketing to gain a share in the increasing green consumer market to offset potential future sales losses in their chemical/synthetic brands. And yes I have now seen Clorox's ventures to place their green products next to their others in the cleaning aisles....in part it is a good thing.
From my soap box though....I will continue to try to be aware of the companies whose products I choose to now support. It's almost impossible to evaluate everything, nor do I have the time to attempt such a feat and as Justwaaa said others will tell us we are obsessed...but it is not JUST the problems of environmental pollution in the manufacturing of these products to consider it is the whole nut if you will, are the products biodegradable after we use them? I will not personally purchase any Clorox products as they are not responsible in that their main products still are manufactured with chlorine and ammonia...synthetic crud etc...huge company turning a corner but miles and miles to go. I cannot afford many of the products by the extremely concious companies....but do try to replace one product at a time. So while I have enjoyed Burts Bees lipbalm and shampoos....I have to consider who the bottom line profits are going to now....so re-evaluating a former good choice because of the bigger picture.....
GA. It seemed an impossible and highly unlikely takeover - but it appears to be true as evidenced by a question on the FAQ section of the Burts Bees site. See following link:
I'm really not sure HOW I feel about this. In a perfect world, it gives BB capital to expand and deliver better. In an imperfect world...I don't even like to think about it.
Sigh. I'm sad now.
************************** Begin as you mean to go on...
Will have to read the site thanks toomuch....darn darn darn...and Burt looked so cute in his little bee costume hanging around in the stores the past few years...
AND in the comment section another small company I have supported TOM's of Maine mostly for toothpaste and shaving gel was sold to COLGATE....did not know....
Lights I think I have been addicted to their lipbalm for at least 15 years.....it is a good product! When I found out about the takeover it was while I was checking out a huge display at Whole Foods and the lady telling me was also checking out HUGO Natural products on SALE...so we both bought their vanilla orange shampoo in protest of the Clorox thing...and trying it this morn I really liked it! As did my family... Two ladies said they met Hugo at whole foods and he was really wonderful to them, they are supposed to be offering lip balm too....will have to check them out more Hugo Naturals Ooooh just looked and they have Grapefruit lip balm.....so many of the natural organic lines of shampoos still have parabens etc mixed in....this line looks promising!
Guess that takeover being a year ago explains why suddenly Burt's appeared everywhere...Target, drugstores, grocery stores etc. Clorox already had the market in those stores. Just heard a report on NPR about Clorox and their ventures into Greenworks....said while they are trying this they still will sell all the other stuff as long as people buy it. The REPORT SAID while green enviro products sales have increased 20% in market share this past year....Clorox still makes 15% of the WORST chemical products....I guess I can't stomach a company just going into it for market share....when they do in fact use chemicals that can harm the public in many of their other products and according to multiple sources are not regulated to disclose what chemicals they actually use in those...just give it a nice synthetic scent and market it....

I can't agree with statements like this. First of all, what products are you talking about that Clorox is making that is not being disclosed?
The products they make are neutral. How people use them are good and/or bad.
and people only start making stuff for retail because they are into it for profit. As Adam Smith says, it's not by the generous nature of the butcher or the baker that they provide the goods we need or would like to buy. These people are producing a good that someone wants for some purpose.
Even Chlorine Bleach has had applications which have been beneficial. WE take for granted here in this country the concept of cleanliness.
Ammonia is also used as a fertilizer, and can also kill germs which are not necessarily "Good" to be around.
I think it's wrong to label a company like Clorox as "EVIL" -- there are lots of normal human beings working there for a living.

There are some instances when cost/benefit makes the use of chemicals the best alternative.
In this country, unlike many others, we have a safe, reliable drinking water supply primarily because of chlorine and sometimes ammonia. There is no other method that is as cost efficient to produce the amount of drinking water needed in this county as effective as chloirne.
If you read your history, water borne disease was rampant 100-150 years ago ofter killing numerous people every year. Water borne illness and death from these diseases no longer exist because of chemicals. Not all chemicals are BAD!
Yes Ilvmicki2....I agree society as a whole has in many instances benefited and will continue to benefit from the use of chemicals...I agree not all chemicals are BAD. In the larger picture I do have some friends who are phd's who are chemists...study cancer...and perhaps the role of certain chems. From all my reading some chemicals, however are KNOWN to be bad for our bodies and the environment, both in their creation and use on the production end and their life after use in our earth and water supplies. In many instances the chemicals known to be bad it is unclear what quantity or level is harmful to humans...rather suspected a bioacculmulation over time. I read some reports on breast cancer that when they looked at actual tumors a huge portion of them were comprised of parabens...a contraversial preservative still widely used....the question being how much and how did they get there...assumed thru personal products. And yes the main reason chlorine is used in so many areas is just that, because it is cost efficient...cheap to use as agent in our household cleaners. I have talked with a few chemists myself to see what they think about disinfecting and how bacteria needs something to feed upon to exist....but enough of that...thanks for your post. I am happy when I see companies making bigger changes to try to find alternatives that are both beneficial to their profit lines as well as our societies...where the cost/benefit becomes more in line with the greater good.
Aye that it is and I AM talking about how chemicals impact our environment...and I was speaking about a company who has a negative impact on such....and how it bothered me that Burts sold out to it....
