I was going to post this on the 'Why Bother' topic but decided it doesn't really belong there.

There is a new coop of farmers who were going to grow sunflowers for biofuel. However, this sping after 2 years, they changed their minds and are now growing all those acres of sunflowers for edible oil and safflower oil. They were concerned with food shortages and prices. They decided this is the most humane thing to do.

I think if we were to actually organize all the available crops (expecially those that are being paid not grow) we would have a nice balance between food crops and fuel crops. Also there are other crops than corn that can be grown for fuel and are easier to convert as well.

And also. we need to not be careless with bio fuel just cuz it can be grown and renewable. Ther are things that are being made from food crops that are not really necessairy IMO. for our green day at work they found these nifty biodegradable bowls that were like paper but made of a soy product. Neat, yes. necessairy? well we have to answer that individually.

Biodegradable bags have their purpous but are derived from crops. I think these products are being used carelessy. Like do we really need a bio degradable bag liner for our indoors compost bin so we can carry the bag to the composter instead of the container? And if we are using compostable bags but then thrwoing them away in a regular plastic trash bag... where's the bennifit there?

In a effort to reduce our dependance on oil we need to be more conservitave about our renuable resources as well and get the biggest bang for our buck so to say.
