So here is the deal... My husband and I are looking to rent our first place together, however we are on a very limited budget and are not willing to give up our kids (2 dogs) after my many miscarriages and the fact they help with my disabilities.. I have no idea what to expect nor what resources to go through. We moved from another state as we were on the streets an could not find work.. Family here took us in and now we have work waiting on us in another town, but are in desperate need of a place... Any suggestions on Where I should go or what I should do??

Esling, Welcome to the Real Estate boards and I'm sorry that life has been tough for you in the last few years but there is always hope that things WILL get better.

I understand your need to be able to find a place that will allow you to keep the dogs so, first things first, if the family that took you in is willing, you need to take every opportunity to work and save every dollar you make toward a first/last and security deposit. Then call your state's toll-free number for services - here it is 211.

Next, you need to network with service providers. How to do that? Funnily enough, it is by volunteering to help others who are even less fortunate than yourself because those providers are usually the first to hear about new opportunities for individuals in your situation. So volunteer to help others - just might get the break you are looking for by caring about other people first and receiving a break for yourself at the same time!

Most states have programs - and waiting lines - for subsidized living but if you actively try to help others while waiting for help yourself, you might be surprised what comes along.

Thank you for your advice... We only have one month to find a place and get in so we can start work, we were just notified of our new jobs just a day ago, so saving is a little out of our reach, however I am going to put your advice to work and be sure to pass the advice along. Thank you again!

One thing I did forget to mention is we would be moving 2-4 hours from our current location... Which is why we only have one month to figure something out... That makes things so much tougher.

Check the ads from the local newpaper either on-line or at the library.

If you feel comfortable with it, ask your future employer if they know of anyplace to rent.

Some homeowers that don't sell opt to rent. Though realtors often do not work with rentals, in some areas they know of houses that might be available. It will not hurt to call a couple realtors in your new area.

Are you affiliated with a church that could help? Check at the court house in your new town and see what they have posted on their community board about services offered.
