Okay, just for fun here! Smile

Thought about this when I was reading another thread about meatloaf! DH and I have been married for 37 years, no two-legged children but many, many four legged ones and, one thing we never discussed before the marriage, was food! Whew, what a relief that he felt the same as I about certain ones - they have never darkened our door - or should I say, our dining room!

First up: Liver and Fried Onions!

Anyone else? Cool

In our house the number one thing is any kind of shrimp. That is because one of our children has a serious allergy to it. I won't even let it in the house in any form.

My husband would also add tuna noodle casserole, but the rest of us like it, so we have it when he is out of town.

My never gonna do it is asparagus. Just can't eat that. At all.

Thanks for the post back, cocok! Oh, my, I love shrimp in every form available but understand how serious allergies can be so you are right there.

Too funny about the tuna noodle casserole - When DH and I were dating - I made one for "hunting camp in the wilds chasing after Bullwinkle - don't worry, Bullwinkle won!" I took up a big Pyrex pan of tuna casserole AND the guys put it directly on the fire to heat it up over the campfire and, yes, explosion!!! We ate fried potatoes and onions for the next 3 days... And I have never made it since! Big Grin

Lastly, asparagus. Smile My cat loved asparagus and I hated it - DH was excited when it ripened on the ditched banks - we both scrambled to collect it, steamed it and sat down to the table to enjoy it...

Thought DH was going to have a heart attack when he saw me feeding each of my delicate spears to Cat - one for him, one for Cat! He was sputtering that "you can't do that" and my response was "watch me!" Sometimes, I wonder that we stayed together in the early years - but, hey, I totally dislike asparagus and Cat loved it so why waste it? Cool

Hello All,
Headcheese will never darken my doorstep or cross my lips, ugliest looking stuff I have ever seen. Oh, I forgot about canned corned beef. When I was young and guilible, my older brother, John, my nemisis, whispered in my ear that Mother was trying to feed us Red Heart dog food, not to eat the meat. Since then I have never eaten canned corned beef.

Thanks for the giggles.... amazing how often memories, sights and smells effect our choices. Dad loved headcheese & so did I (can't find the real thing now). OT, but early this morning the air smelled like "hunting season", memories of when Dad & I would leave home at 2 am and drive for miles to hunt wild game and share a mid morning snack of Italian dry salame, Swiss cheese, and crackers.

The one thing that will NEVER be in my home: canned pea! gag!!
There are a few veggies I don't care for - don't buy nor serve them, but I have never met an "A" veggie I didn't like! I want my beef pink (medium well), lamb medium rare; pork & chicken well done & succulent. Wild game: too many variables.
The kids (now adults) & I will try any "new" food ONCE, especially authentic ethnic dishes. If the ingredients are fresh & properly prepared, usually surprizingly yummy!

LOL...That's the first thing that came to mind...Calves liver and onions! Now I LOVE foie gras (goose liver).

Any one of those box meals with "Helper" on the front. Though I have never even tried it...am I missing something?

Canned Octopus...if DH ever tries cooking that again I'm gonna stay in a hotel until the house airs out! Yuck

Liver and Fried Onions!

That would be the top of my list too! But I love liverwurst.

Some other things we like are shrimp (DH almost every time we eat out gets this) and I love creamed chipped beef (it is my comfort food)

I hate tuna noodle casserole and a tuna melt almost makes me want to gag, but DH loves them both.

I don't eat any canned vegetables but am not too wild about fresh ones either. . . oh wait I love canned beets.

I have always wanted to try each one of those exotic looking products in the meat dept. Sadly they are becoming fewer and fewer.

My DH is a very fussy eater so there is a lot of stuff that doesn't come out of my kitchen that I would adore . . . like eggplant anything and lamb, lots of things.

My canned corned beef is canned ravioli with meat. Mother fixed it once, you know the good monthers of the 50's. Operative word - once. I cut into it and told her it looked like Ken'l Ration dog food.

Okay, I jumped right to the reply and haven't even read any of the posts, so no influencing the answer!!

Liver and onions; canned asparagus; squid; octopus; geoducks; tripe; chittlins;

There may be others but I can't think of them at the moment.

I don't eat shellfish but I do cook shrimp for DH occasionally.

Enjoying this thread! But surprised that no one has said lutefisk or pickled herring - blech!

LOS - growing up, we could not have a beet unless we cleaned our plate! My GM could pickle a beet like nobody's business - rich with cloves and so wonderfully earthy. It was a heavenly desert and if you put one in front of me I would choose it over the richest and most decadent chocolate dishes available.

Chittlins - never had it, but we (lovingly) refer to our mutt as a Chittlin. She's half CHIhuahua, half sheTLAND. And she'll eat ANYTHING that's put on her plate!

No liver of any kind!
No beef heart & dressing!
No headcheese, souse, or brains! They are all in the same catagory to me!
No sea food! The smell turns my stomach!
Just copied this from FFG...canned asparagus; squid; octopus; geoducks; tripe; chittlins!
No venison! It feels like I'm eating sand, the texture!
No harvard beets, pickeled are great!

I LOVE asparagus...steamed & drowned in real butter w/a little salt.
Spam isn't so bad if that's all you can afford..then fix it like a ham w/glaze & cloves.
I make good white gravy especially sausage gravy to go on biscuits! YUM!
I'll skip the corned beef (unless it's homemade) and any chef-boy-r-d stuff! YUCK!
I like jello w/fruit...as long as it's covered in cool whip! ((big grin))

Most fish.

I "allow" The Husband to take the cups of tuna and salmon in his lunches, but he's not allowed to open the containers in the house.

A couple of times a year, I crave albacore but only use one brand, and in the one container. The containers each have their own flavor even though they are the same brand.

So, using the cup albacore, I'll make "tuna salad" sandwiches with swiss and lettuce, OR a particular tuna noodle casserole passed on to me (using the albacore).

Organ meats - blech. Once upon a time, I did cook beef liver for 1st DH and some for 2nd DH and DS. But 2nd DH said he'd just get it at Luby's. YAY me!

Headcheese, souse, "goose" liver sandwich 'meat'..

Potted meat which isn't meat anyway - false advertising.
Spam. Ate it when I was a kid. Bought some withing the last 15 years for camping, sliced it and fried it. Oh yuck! Blech.

Same thing with Vienna sausage.
Any weiner/frankfurter with poultry in it. Don't ask me why. I've been buying Hebrew National but noticed the other day that Oscar Meyer is advertising an all beef weiner with not meat by-products or filler. I'm going to have to try that. My mother bought nothing but OM.

Bologna of any sort. MOF, not much sandwich meat to start with. I will buy sandwich ham and beef pastrami. That's about it.

Canned mackerel. Well, most canned meats except a good white tuna for salad and salmon for croquettes. Canned chicken just stinks.

I do not eat any rare or raw meat. Sushi - nope. It's got to be tossed over a flame first!

Beets of any kind.
For the kids & DH they hope I'll never make Moussaka again.
Otherwise DH has a problem with livers from any animal, canned fish products and goulash.
There are no hunters in our families so we've never had wild game.

That's a good question and I'm having a hard time finding an answer b/c I like most everything if prepared correctly. If someone was going to tell me "Oh you're gonna love the inside of a cows stomach", I would have suggested they were crazy... but I do in Mondongo. We went to the Peabody Hotel in Orlando and I thought I was going to "act" sophisticated and ordered the Sweetbreads, couldn't force them down. I was pretty sure they were prepared well since it was a 5 star restaurant. Another food is Anticucho, a Peruvian dish made with cows heart. Surprisingly I love lengua... beef tongue... Nicaraguans have a wonderfully tender and tasty recipe. So, I guess if you have a really good chef I think just about anything can taste good, and sometimes it's just mind over matter Smile

Spanish Revival, Thanks so much for posting but the truth of the matter is "if you have to employ the old 'mind over matter' in order to swallow the food" - it goes on my list of things that will NEVER be made in my kitchen or served in my dining room! Cool

MMMM..Sweetbreads and specialty dishes like escargot, turtle are delicious, but that is something I wouldn't think to try in MY kitchen, I don't think I've ever seen them fresh at a grocery store either. I think some things are better left to the great chefs out there. LOL!

Definitely! If it takes "mind over matter" to swallow. No thanks! Think about those folks on Survivor eating bugs and stuff. IF I'm starving and HAVE to is one thing. Voluntarily...umm...no.

We have a local butcher - they do the entire job on location. 1st husband brought home sweetbreads. I cooked them to his specifications. He devoured the entire dish all by himself. What can I say...I'm a decent cook. Wink

Same thing with "Rocky Mountain Oysters." No thanks!!

Other meats I just thought about:
Possum or armadillo.
Goose prepared by anyone but me. I think it has to do with the variety of goose but I haven't eaten goose prepared by someone else that I liked.
Any duck I prepare...I cannot cook a decent duck but ate some extremely delicious duck several years ago prepared by a French-trained chef in Lake City Colorado. Also had the first tomato soup I ever liked - tomato bisque. OH MY it was delicious!

Dear Idaho,
What a great question!
I have to admitte that there are a few things that will never come out of my kitchen, but my number one answer is RUTABERGERs(sp?) in any form. They are hard to peel and cut, take a long time to cook, and no matter how yolu fix them or how much butter(Mom used to put butter in them) they still taste alfull!!!!! Plus they stink when they are cooking!
Another one that will never see the light of day in my kitchen is creamed carrorts. Mom used to make a Noodle ring with creamed carrots for Friday Night Dinner.(I grew up as a Catholic in the days when you did not eat meat on Friday, So a noodle ring, which I loved, was a great meat free meal, untill she added the creamed carrots to it.)Another dish that will never come out of my kitchen is "left over salad". That was usually something that Mom made for lunch on Saturday. She would cook some up some maccarone(sp?), throw in all the left over meat, vegies ect from the week and make a mayo, mustard dressing to the dish. She also made a game of it, if whoever could guess the most left overs in the salad got an extra cookie as a reward.
A "hot dish" that contains all the left over meat, gravy and vegs from the week and is topped with mashed potatoes.
Mary

I'm very adventurous when it comes to trying new foods, and if I stayed locked in a state of mind that wouldn't let me try new foods I think I would miss out on a lot of great cuisine. So, mind over matter works for me. I've discovered lots of great food I might never have had the nerve to try Smile by just forgetting what it is and learning to enjoy it! There are so many cuisines around the world that don't stick to meat and potatos!

So am I, Spanish Revival. I was lucky to have access to all kinds of awesome ethnic cuisines growing up along with very adventurous parents and family members. Our motto: Try it, you might like it!

I always try a new food once or twice, to give it a chance. Most I like: and that includes organ meats, fish of all kinds, raw or cooked, and lots, lots more. Depends on how well it is prepared.

I may not cook everything I like at home, but I don't shy away from ordering them in restaurants. Another motto: if it tastes good; it is good.

Interesting thread!
One thing I don't cook is pork. I never had pork chops or a cooked ham. I don't make it at home, but I have had pork in Chinese food, and deli ham and bacon, but never tasted a ham w/pineapple slices that I would have to cook myself.
