Thanksgiving dressing Sign In/Join
posted
Not the kind you put in the bird but the kind you put on your body!

Because on Thanksgiving we, in part, celebrate the survival of the original north east settlers and the meal they shared with the natives they encountered upon landing here, and because these settlers were puritans with their sombre colored clothing, I have always found it appropriate to wear like colored clothing on thanksgiving.

Has anyone else ever considered this and if so do they dress accordingly? Another reason for this choice is that we are about to embark on the most colorful season we celebrate, there fore this is sort of an acknowledgment of that.

Oh, also BTW I look good in those colors!

Fun thread (pun intended).

Never gave much thought to what I would wear on Turkey Day, but being from New York and always needing to wear slimming clothes, black is my default color for clothes -- year 'round. Sometimes deep brown. Lately, I like to wear something colorful near my neck, like a scarf, so my face doesn't look drained.

As a little kid, I usually wore gravy on my shirt.

That's funny that you say that... when I was young and one of my brothers would come home late after having missed dinner he would say, "Sis, come here so I can see what we had for dinner", b/c it was usually all over the front of my shirt!

On Thanksgiving day I wear an apron!

It's pretty colorful....black with red & yellow chili peppers. I still have a few days, maybe I need to make one more appropriate to the season.

LOS, I know the New Englanders won the war in the press taking credit for the first Thanksgiving, but history proves the real first Thanksgiving in the New World was held near Berkeley Plantation on the banks of the James River in Virginia. Wink

I have never thought about what is appropriate to wear - usually somehing very comfortable.

LOS, You must be kidding! Dress in an era-appropriate style? I'm lucky if I dress at all for Thanksgiving - it's just DH and I so I just "wing it" re clothing! Okay, back to being serious: I will put on clothes for DH's family celebration but costumes? Uhmmm - not happening here! Happy Thanksgiving all... Cool

I wear black all the time because life is easier that way.

That means sometimes I'm dressed appropriately. Other times, not.

If not dressing in a muu-muu...the Cherokee part of me should dress as in mourning...

Come on, LOS is not suggesting costumes, just more sombre colors.

If we are hosting friends and family, perhaps we should take a few minutes when guests begin arriving and before the big feast to make ourselves look a little more presentable and not like the family cook.

And no, I'm not saying go all out and get all fancied up - just 5 minutes in the bathroom and take a break from it all. I think those of us in charge of the majority of cooking will feel more in the spirit. In fact next year, I hope someone reminds me to take my own advice.

Fabric that coordinates with the color of Gravy? Good camouflage for the drips.

Didn't depictions of the pilgrims show long aprons?Wink

Um m m, IR where did I say anything about costumes? This thread is a good indication of the dangers of the much touted "thinking outside the box!"

BTW went on a search for the dress I thought I would wear, a brown knit, couldn't find it but did find a black jersey and it beats elastic because like a muu muu (although not the ones I saw last winter in Hawaii) it has no waist!

I seldom wear much different than jeans and sweaters, but on Thanksgiving I like to wear a corderoy jumper I've had forever. Its very autumnal, black with a tiny deep burgundy and camel coulored spray floral pattern all over it. I wear it with a turtleneck, either cream or burgandy. I LOVE wearing this because it gets 2 birds with 1 stone. It's VERY comfy yet looks far more "festive" than my usual stuff.

Its also the only dress I own.

while I'm cooking I wear an apron I made a few years ago that's an all over print of the states with their stae flower and bird printed on it. I love that design.

For Christmas dinner I always wear a red sweater and red plaid flannel slacks.

Life is GOOD!!

I'll probably wear jeans and some kind of cute top, covered by an apron. I am guessing my hair will be up in a ponytail. I like to wear flip-flops around the house, but may put on some sort of flat shoe, maybe my pink ballet flats. Not sure. (I will be in the kitchen cooking for 30 people, so I need to be comfortable.)

I do wear a lot of simple darker colors like black and brown, especially this time of year, so I get what you are saying Lady of shallot.

My typical fall/winter outfit is corduroy pants, a coordinating sweater and a scarf!!! They are generally fall- like colors. I like to look pulled together yet be comfy, too.

The Pilgrims and Puritans are not one and the same! I am a Mayflower descendant.
So no I don't wear black with a big ole' collar.

Listen, I've planned any nice holiday or special event for more than a few days, so you are absolutely not coming to my table in JEANS, T-shirt or sweatshirt.

When I get out any of my dishware or china, I send out invitations and have the notation "Sunday Best" printed on them.

All cell phones are off limits at my table and there is no TV while we dine.

Now on the rare occasion that I would ever serve guests on paper plates, which I don't think has ever happened inside the house or on my yard, you can wear jeans, tees, or shorts and blab/play away on some stupid game you think is more important than enjoying anyone elses company.

Oops, LOS, sorry I mis-read your original post! I understand now what you were talking about so would simply say anything in harvest colors ~ browns, yellows, sage greens, shades of orange and such although, to be honest, I rarely go shopping and seldom consider clothes as part of the occasion. Perhaps I should re-consider... Cool

I bet the person with the cell was embarrassed!

Always a good idea to have a sign to remind people to shut them off or silence them when entering any quiet event. Too easy to forget them in purse or pocket.

My cell phone stays in the vehicle for the exact reason mentioned above, so I don't ever forget to turn it off when I attend anything away from home.
If I am going to need to make a call from a committee meeting with regards to our meeting expectations is the only reason I take it in with me.
Otherwise, I check it for calls each time I get into the car.
Works for everyone else plus me and I NEVER HAVE TO BE EMBARRASSED!

I'm so looking forward to visiting with my family on Thursday. I love autumn colors and had a special monogrammed patch pocket tee made with gold, burgundy, brown, green, yellow, etc.(think of the colors in a cornucopia). Will wear it with nice jeans and flats. I'm preparing dinner for 42 people so cooking enough food and staying cool and comfortable is all I'm concerned about. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

We will be as comfortable as possible...our normal jeans & t-shirts!

Going out to dinner - so I will wear dressy casual - something appropriate for the fall season. At home, I would change before sitting down to dinner which I always do for every holiday. More importantly, why don't we talk about everyone's favorite "savory" dressing for the turkey dinner ?

Great idea. I vote for traditional bread stuffing/dressing made with sausage, celery, onions and sage. Um, Um, Um.

Big Grin Southern cornbread dressing! An ex-SIL contacted me about DMs recipe. She also asked if I was buying a "real" ham from the meat locker as DM did...alas no.
