What sides would you suggest to serve with a BBQ Turkey? I know I don't post on this forum very often and give any suggestions but I would appreciate your ideas. Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Do you mean smoked?

I usually serve it with the traditional turkey and trimmings. Glazed sweet potatoes and whole berry cranberry sauce are really good with the smoky meat.

If you are shredding with barbecue sauce I would treat it like pork barbecue.

I would also do either cole slaw or broccoli salad.

Charming, it is smoked with barbeque sauce. A local BBQ restaurant prepares them. I was planning to have sweet potatoes but had decided not to cook dressing. I am planning to serve a baked ham also. Grapefruit, I hadn't thought about the cole slaw. That's easy and I make a pretty good one if I say so myself. Thank you.

Sounds good - if you have a traditional sweet potato recipe you always use - mix it up to go along with the new flavors of the barbecue turkey.

Also fresh green beans would be good - rather than the heavy green bean casserole.

Since there will probably be no gravy a good potato side dish is this Potato Casserole:

1 bag Ore-Ida Hash Browns with onion and green peppers, I think they're called O'Brien Potatoes
1 t. salt or to your taste
1 can cream of chicken soup
1 cup grated cheddar cheese
1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
2 c. Corn Flakes

Thaw potatoes in a Pyrex, or casserole dish, I use a 9 X 13 Pyrex dish
mix remaining ingredients and pour over potatoes. Topping: Mash 2 c. crushed cornflakes and add the melted butter, spread over top of potatoes. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.

My in-laws wouldn't consider it a barbeque unless you serve potato salad--along with sweet potatoes. (They also insist on rice and gravy at every meal even if you also have rice dressing AND cornbread dressing!) Baked beans would be good as well.

I was gonna say how wonderful mashed potatoes are with barbecued stuff, but the potato casserole would fill that bill perfectly. And whatever veggies you want to serve.

What time is dinner? Smile

I'm with your dad, we don't do all the feast on Christmas anymore. We will have a big brunch around 10 or 11 and then DH and I will have soup and sandwich for dinner.

Georgia, I don't stand on turkey for Christmas either. It can be anything that day. Last year I served beef roast with cranberries and green chilis. No idea yet what its going to be this year.

A few years back, my sisters and brother were unable to be with us on Christmas Day so it was my family and my dad and mom. So I thought it would be nice to offer to take them to a nice restaurant for dinner. He said he would rather come to my house, eat low country boil, and take a nap. So that's exactly what we all did LOL Smile

I'm thinking scalloped taters, cole slaw would be good too and maybe a fresh lemon meringue pie!
