Some time ago Linderhof said that she only uses whole canned tomatoes, and chops or purees etc as the need be. The other day reading an old Martha Stewart "Living" I learned why she does that. It seems that if you get the whole tomatoes you are getting the best of the tomatoes picked with no questionable additives. so from now on it is whole canned tomatoes for this household!

Certainly makes sense, but I didn't know that. www.floridafarmgirlsworld.blogspot.com Life isn't about how to survive the storm, but how to dance in the rain.

But "our" Martha has a better personality. (I've never cared for the other one. However, I do believe she got a bum rap...she got caught up in the "good ol' boy system" so they made an example of her.) LOS -- that's interesting and I DID NOT know that. But it DOES make a lot of sense. I buy WHOLE tomatoes because that way I only have to buy ONE product -- I can do the chopping, pureeing myself but . . . you cannot put chopped tomatoes back together to make a whole one if you need it! I have been having a hard time finding canned whole tomatoes period. Yesterday, Winco only had diced tomatoes, even with the Muir Glen, which I was very surprised to see that they even carried. So I bought it. When I make my spaghetti sauce, I've always used the largest-sized can of whole tomatoes . . . never knowing about the benefits of canned whole tomatoes. Guess, I'll have to make a point of shopping elsewhere for for my canned whole tomatoes. I also like the Cento brand because they're plum tomatoes, which are good in spaghetti sauces. I have a hard time finding that product, too. This message has been edited. Last edited by: CA Lori,

And aren't we lucky to have our own Martha? Why would the whole tomatoes have no additives? I would think think that they were processed the same way and the additives would be added with the processing. I use can my own tomatoes and it is the same only some tomatoes are sliced or diced or left whole. Love to eat whole canned tomatoes right out of the can. Yum. Wanda

Well, yes but you are doing the canning. I can't remember verbatim what the article said but the general gist was that canned whole tomatoes are superior to those that are diced etc. In other words more perfect tomatoes go into the cans where they are whole.
