I am really trying to eat healthier. But I am stuck on what to eat for breakfast. I have never been a breakfast eater-preferring to skip it all together and have an early lunch when I am truly hungry. I like to get up, have my coffee, and because I have really been trying to eat something, have a piece of buttered toast an hour or so after that. Thats about all I can manage. I would like to be able to incorporate more protien into my light breakfast, as I often get the low sugar shakes mid to late morning. I am able to have an egg on morinngs I feel really hungry, but that isn't something I like to do daily. Adding to the problem is that I am lactose intolerant so things with dairy are out. I have read aboout things like veggie smoothies, but I'm not sure I would like those if I were hungry! Overall, I am not a fan of traditional breakfast foods, and when you pair that up with the lactose intolerance, it makes it hard (for me) to come up with some alternatives to a high carb light breakfast like I am having now. Any suggestions will be appreciated!

Not a fan of peanut butter toast.

Even though you are lactose intolerant, you should be able to eat yogurt (at least all my li friends do) -- if you like coffee, why not make a "shake" with coffee and a vanilla yogurt. The yogurt has protein. Just "fiddle" with the portions until you find one you like. Martha

My lactose intolerance is so severe that I can't tolerate ANY dairy. I do have my little miracle pill (Lactose Intolerance Therapy by Ganedin) that I take after breakfast that allows me to have small amounts of dairy eaten with other foods. Occaisionally I will have an omelette with a small amount of cheese and I will take the pill before breakfast when I do. I love fruit smoothies and make them with Rice Dream rice milk. But they aren't something I want for breakast. No protein. I have looked for protein powders to add to them but they all seem to have a milk derivative in them. I have never liked yogurt- even when I could eat it. I tried all kinds and flavors back then. Not trying to be difficult, but the lactose thing really hinders the light breafast as I could eat cheese toast. But I would pay dearly for that later in the day as I know to never, ever, eat dairy on a completely empty stomach. Since I am not a fan of breakfast foods, I am definitely open to tninking outside the box to get some protein added to me breakfast. THis would mean no bacon, sausage, the tradrional breakfast meats. I'm thinking maybe some lean deli meat on my toast, but wouldn't want to do that daily as I'm really trying to get away from processed foods on a regular basis.

I've been told almond milk is far superior to soy milk. (I don't know because I have no problems with cow's milk and that's what I buy and drink.) Prepare an egg your style (boiled, poached, fried, scrambled) and have an egg sandwich or egg on toast or English muffin. The egg is your protein no need for added meat. You don't have to purchase deli meat. Cook your own meat, chicken, beef, pork then slice and make your own sandwich. Since you don't like traditional breakfast meat, what about a scoop of chicken salad on bread or toast? Add a small plate of fruit if you like. My brother's favorite breakfast was leftover homemade chicken soup our mother made. I personally like leftover pizza for breakfast...put it directly on the shelf in the oven to reheat or (this is what I do) put it face down in a non-stick skillet. When it starts sizzling a bit, turn it over with a spatula to crisp the bottom. You can order pizza without cheese... Good luck! I keep a few hard boiled eggs in the fridge all the time for my little guy who apparently lives on air. He peels them, then eats ONLY the white. shudder. anyway how about a hb egg, with a couple of flavorful crackers? light, simple and filling. I too am a breakfast skipper. I simply can not put food in my mouth before noon. Nope, never could. Life is GOOD!!

I have a mini bagel with preserves, half a grapefruit, and a mixture of orange and cranberry juices.

LOL- If I had my way, I'd have a good old Dunkin Donut with my Dunkin Donuts coffee each morning! Like Kathy in wslv, I hate the thought of food in the morning so it's been a major feat to actually want something light by 8-ish! Think I'll try boiling some eggs to have on hand. I'm not worried about the cholesterol in them as I've never had trouble with that and eat a pretty low fat diet anyway. KYIS- I prefer the taste of almond milk over rice but for some reason it affects me as if it were dairy. I am guessing it might have something to do with the way it is processed as I can eat almonds just fine. Back in the day cold leftover pizza was my favorite breakfast!Wonder if I might order up a special one and freeze the pieces? I already have a whole turkey breast on my grocery list so I think I will try some of that meat in the morning. Grapefruit- I think I'll put mini bagels on the list also. Hmmm...boiled egg and mini bagel sounds good. Good ideas!

I think eggs are a great way to start off the day of eating, lots of protein that really stays with you. For thinking out of the box... when we went to Japan and had typical Japanese meals... fish was always served for breakfast. It took a little getting used to but turned out to be very good. I think soup is another great alternative, bean soup, homemade turkey soup(my personal favorite) or anything that you just like to eat during any other part of the day, turn it into breakfast! I'm not a big breakfast eater either, prefer to wait till the afternoon so I know how you feel... I feel if I eat breakfast for some reason I'm MORE hungry throughout the day

My sister has the same issues regarding breakfast, except that she can tolerate dairy. But, she simply cannot eat anything when she gets up. Coffee yes, but no smoothies. So, she prepares portable high-protein breakfasts the night before and takes them to work. She is up by 5:30 a.m. and gets to work byt 7:30. She eats at her desk or in her office canteen around 8:30 or 9 a.m. (She eats lunch around 1 p.m.) Some ideas: -apples or bananas with peanut butter and whole wheat crackers -rice cakes with peanut/almond butter and real fruit jam -granola or granola bar/energy bar and fresh fruit -hard-boiled eggs, v-8 juice and whole wheat crackers -hummus w/crackers -homemade Morning Glory/banana-nut/carrot muffins

During the summer when my tomatoes are growing good, I like mac/cheese w/sliced tomatoes. So think about maybe some kind of pasta too with a veggie on the side or pasta w/fruit on the side. I LOVE a big bowl of cantalope, honey dew, watermelon for breakfast! What about putting wheat germ on what ever you decide to have, it's protien.

GA karen- I did not know that about wheat germ- I've heard of it but never had it. But I will look for it when I'm at the grocery again. Went today and got some plain mini bagels, that turkey breast- I'll roast it Sun and I got some deli ham too. Spanish revival- I think if I had to drink a smoothie in the early morning I wouldn't be able to, but ask me again about mid afternoon! Y'all have given me some good ideas. In a perfect world, only coffee would suit me just fine, and later, a donut or a cinnamon roll! But I need to eat healthier and cut out the carbs so I'm going to try my new goodies and hopefully I will start to like them in the morning....hopefully...

Make a bowl of oatmeal in the micro and use a bit of Truvia if you prefer a bit of sweetness but I simply add some cinnamon. Use the specialty lactose intolerant milks. Oatmeal is a healthy and filling breakfast food. It will keep you satisfied for some time.
|
I really like coconut milk on cereal. If you have not tried it, do so, it may surprise you. Twice the calcium per serving of dairy milk too.

Froo- I sometimes have oatmeal. I make the quick cooking and use lactose free milk and a tiny bit of brown sugar sprinkled on the top. Im down to about a tsp of brown sugar- thats good for me to have cut back! Conrad- I have tried and like the coconut milk with my cereal.

For breakfast just now, I split a plain mini bagel, buttered it, took a half slice of muenster cheese and divided it on the bagel halves and topped each with some dei ham and toasted. It was good. Took my lactose pill before eating. We'll see how I do with the cheese and if the low sugar shakes in a few hours will be avoided. I'm not diabetic, but the sugar will drop late mornings if I have a high carb breakfast, which is what I'm trying to get away from.

Raisins or cut prunes....even a bit of honey can sub for brown sugar. The next time you nuke some oatmeal tho, try sprinkling some cinnamon on it. Gradually, you won't miss a sweetening additive.
|
DH cooks his oatmeal every week day that I don't make breakfast. I glaze some walnuts in the microwave (a bit of white and brown sugar and small amount of water, cinnamon and sesame seeds) And it stores in zip lock bags for him to use. This adds the sweetening and a bit of healthy protein, if you like nuts (I sure do, most of my best friends are nuts).

That toast was probably 90% carbs and without protein & fiber quickly became glucose. Like OP, I rarely eat breakfast; a mid morning fruit or protein drink suffices until LUNCH... my big meal of the day (double protein & tripple fresh veggies). occasionaly a mid afternoon snack of fresh fruit, nuts, or a hard boiled egg. For dinner a green salad with lean protein, or maybe a low sodium 1 g sugar 2 g carb 15 g protein drink. RE Lactose intolerance: - substitute dairy with almond or rice milk. IMO American soy products are iffy because processing methods increase the chance soy will mess with hormones. Avoid processed foods. Maybe more importantly: measure portions! Read lables to avoid ingredients you cannot prounouce; "ose" means sugar usually made from processed corn. Limit diet drinks to one or less per day; avoid "sugar substitutes" - use Steevia (Truvia), agave or raw honey. To reduce sodium/salt, use fresh or dry herbs and Mediteranean spices: cardamon, cinnamon, nutmeg, tumeric Steaming fresh veggies enhances natural flavors; for some a pinch of sea salt after cooking In 5 mos, my SIL dropped 30 lbs on the Paleo diet - nearly identical to the Atkins diet I followed 3 decades ago! This message has been edited. Tessa, I've been drinking rice milk for years. I have LI symptoms for some reason with both soy, and to a lesser extent the almond. At a loss to figure out why. I have cut back on sugar but not enough. I have also cut back on salt. I didn't think I had cut back all that much, but wow- when I have something processed it is sooo salty! I did well with the breakfast this morning- no low sugar shakes. I went and had that other half piece of mozzarella with my lunch- probably shouldn't have as I could tell a few hours later. But at the end of the day all is good.

Makng progress I do as little as possible first thing in the morning. I am not a morning person! So if I hadn't has those eggs pre cooked, I wouldn't have had one. I can see this is going to work. I just have to put forth some effort!

Good for you. It will get easier!

Today, I made oatmeal. Cut up some of our dehydrated apples, added cinnamon to it. Otherwise, we have egg burritos with tortillas (high in fiber and low in calories). Oh my! It's called reading labels and making healthy choices. Some items have shocked me as I check the labels. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

I love oatmeal made that way-the real, not instant! I made some recently and cut up real apple in it and sprinkled it lightly with brown sugar and cinnamon. Dh acted like I had really done something as he thought the only way to oatmeal like this was to have instant!(eyeroll)

I also make instant oatmeal but t has to be Quaker brand. I add cinnamon, sweetner and after adding 1/4 cup boiled water and mixing I add blueberries and a bit of half and half. My sugar counts and cholestrol did improve. html

This is a list of "healthier" snack options, that would also stand in for easier, simple breakfasts. http://redandhoney.com/2012/03...eas-real-food-style/ There are also blogs about what people are eating for breakfast, and I find them a springboard of inspiration. http://365daysofbreakfast.blogspot.com/ http://simplybreakfast.blogspot.com/ http://breakfastblogger.com/

I have oatmeal with fresh grated apple and cinnamon, sometimes will even replace milk or water with apple juice, and I add a Tbsp. of LSA which is ground linseed, sunflower seeds and almonds and an excellent source of protein. Try using almond meal, quinoa, chestnut, or bean flours to make pancakes or crepes, which you can fill or top with some whipped cream made from coconut milk with added jams or jellies or maple syprup. I like baked beans on toast myself Theres lotsa other nut butters besides peanut butter too...I love cashew butter....and I like to whirl up roasted butternut squash to mix with spices and use as a spread too Brown rice sweetened with fruit is also a great high protein cereal alternative " Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly, Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile..
