Yum, the orange jello salad sounds good. I make mine with lime jello, cottage cheese, cool whip, pineapple tidbits and halved marachino cherries..LOVE IT! Will have to try it with the orange jello and fruit cocktail.

I here a lot of food snobs saying bad things about jello salads - but I really like them - the Orange salad sounds really good. Hmmm - where is my Jello?

My sister is hosting this year and instead of reservations I'm in charge of bread (Virginia Light Rolls), Sweet Potato Casserole, and Pecan Pie.

I confess, the pie will probably come from the local bakery.

The good news - the rolls can be made ahead like a brown and serve roll and frozen. I have 2 pans in the freezer, I'll take one out this week and make sure I like the end result. Otherwise I will be making bread Thanksgiving morning.

The Glazed sweet potatoes are a dish from an old Southern Living cookbook. Use fresh sweet potatoes, bake or boil, sliced and pour the glaze over top and bake.

I have two congealed salads I like - one with blueberries and pineapple topped with a cream cheese goodie topping with pecans. The other has cranberry sauce and pineapple in it. You mix it with a mixer which causes a layer of foam on top. IMHO it is a pretty presentation!

We are going to step-son's home. DH wants everyone here. I cluck my tongue and tsk-tsk. However, I am ECSTATIC! I don't have to clean, cook, entertain! I can play with the grands!! bwahahaha

Oh - my DS is trying to find a weekend to come visit with his GF and her 3 DDs. Neither he nor his GF can take off the day of a holiday unless for her it is scheduled or for him it's on the weekend. So...I will probably be cooking but don't know when or what at this time.

I make the same Blueberry Salad - DH's favorite desert. In addition to the blueberry pie filling the recipe calls for, I add extra blueberries sweetened and reduced from the freezer - makes a really firm jello. My recipe also calls for chopped nuts in the cream cheese topping.

My sister used to make her "special" holiday salad/dessert each Thanksgiving/Christmas. Made of pistachio pudding, cool whip, crushed pineapple, and pecans. I always enjoyed it.

This year I am on my own so anytime between now and Nov. 30 I will cook a turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing, gravy, corn, homemade bread and freezer strawberry jam. Probably will bake a few small pumpkin breads w/dried cranberries and nuts to freeze and pull out when needed.

Thanksgiving Day we are going out for dinner. First time since we've had kids to do this.
My extended family gathers on Sunday of the holiday weekend. I'm in charge of the turkey and pies, going early to set the tables.
I'll make one of my cranberry sauces or confections. Earlier this fall I did a batch of the dressing to stuff in a butterflied pork loin. A few sweet potatoes for supper now and then. Whip up a batch of my Harvest Soup to get the "fix" of my Thanksgiving favorites.
Everything is "from scratch" as I have the time.

The jello salads were proudly made by my mom more than 30yrs ago. I'd make one if anyone in my family would eat it, but wouldn't do it just for myself. Oh if only Mom were here and in charge of Thanksgiving....sigh
I do make my own stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, pecan and pumpkin chiffon pie and of courses the big bird and its gravy. It's easy to do if you do your major shopping a week ahead of time and prepare most of the stuff the days before. Last year I even baked the turkey the day before, sliced it all off the bird, and covered it in a pan with chicken broth and reheated it on thanksgiving. Was delicious and very moist.

Thanksgiving? Interesting topic since all of my family has passed along with the fun ways we used to celebrate the day. But DH's mother is still alive and he still has his sister who reigns queen when it comes to holiday celebrations ~ can't count how many charger plates and individual cheese cutters she has BUT I do know that the TV (football) will be turned off and any topic other than politics and her beloved grandchildren are off limits....

So we will go to SIL's house for the day and will dutifully take whatever she has decided she wants us to bring ~ it is NEVER something that I am known for making!

BUT, come Friday, we will cook our own turkey with DH making his stuffing and gravy; I'll be making shrimp salad, green beans and rolls and we will probably still be enjoying them on Sunday night!

What did the pilgrims do without football games to watch and talk about? IR your SIL sounds as if its all about her. I'll be smelling your turkey across the miles on Friday- nothing beats that!!

I used to have everyone at my home for Thanksgiving but now my siblings have grown children where they spend the day. It will be the four of us and lots of pets here for dinner. We always had the "adults" in the dining room at a formal table and the "kids" had their own table where all the cousins old and young ate together. Things always got silly with the kids but no one cared since it was their time to have fun together. TV was off during dinner only. We all enjoyed it that way and it actually gave us some time to talk. It's the only time that I sat down that day until after dessert. I think it's important that everyone has a good time and there's no right way to celebrate the day. It should be a time to simply enjoy being with each other and have a good meal--who cares if the rolls or anything else is store bought, being together is much more important.

I cook ham,turkey and dressing,eggs and cream potatoes.2 sisters and my 2 DD's help with other items.But all time favorite is Daddys greenbeans.We havent made any real plans to location will be.Usually here at my home.
