Do you have a recipe that you simply won’t share? Or…do you offer your recipe to anyone who compliments you on how good the dish is? Arian

Our family published a cookbook a few years ago. Of course, there were plenty of places that I take food to share and people would inquire about the recipe. In that situation, I used it as an opportunity to sell another cookbook. I'd tell them that I could not give them the recipe, but that I could sell them a copy of the cookbook it came from. Worked every time. Now I am down to the last few cookbooks and no longer want to sell any more (keeping for future generations), so I gladly share any recipe.
When I first finished French Cooking lessons, I did not share those recipes as I felt it was not appropriate to circulate those to the masses. Eventually, I have since shared some of them, but most folks recognize they wouldn't ever prepare those dishes themselves. |

Hello Everyone,
I give my recipes out to whomever asks. Here is the reason. Many, many years ago DH's best friend had his mother bake a cake for DH's bd. It was exquisite in looks and taste. I asked for the recipe and she refused to give it out saying she never ever gave out her recipes. Well, to make a long story short, she d i e d shorthly thereafter and her husband threw out all of her recipes and cookbooks. Now no one will ever see or taste this wonderful cake again. From that day forth, I vowed never to be like that, so if people ask, I give out my recipes Save Planet Earth, it is the only Planet with chocolate!! |

I always share -- to me it's a compliment to be asked. And for the most part, recipes are not original so others can find them anyway so why not share your version.

Yes I share. infact if there is a pot luck i generally bring a coppy of the recipe because I always get asked for it. I find it a HUGE complement if someone likes my dish enough to want the recipe and to make it them selves. some times though they look at the recipe and are a bit overwhelmed as I cook from scratch. But other times it has inspired others to venture out of the usual simple recipes. Which I think is a good thing more PPL need to realize that cooking isnt out of reach it sometimes just takes a bit of getting used to when used to a box.
Though I do not like it when you share a recipe and then they bring it as "their" recipe the next time. My step mom does this and it has upset at least 1 of her sisters. And eithe share or don't share But don't sabatoge the recipe. I have not ran accross this but have heard of PPL "sharing" a recipe but screwing it up so the other person will never be able to make it right. ----------------------------- "Children are the message we send to a time we will not see." Like Martha said, most of my recipes I got from someone else or from a cookbook. Therefore, it is not 'my' recipe. I do not own it. Someone shared with me either directly or through a cookbook. I just pass it along.
I do as Rachel does. I print off the recipe on a few cards so I can hand the recipe to the person asking for it. I would hate for a loved recipe to be lost. About 20 years ago my home burned to the ground. Friends and relatives gave copies of recipes I had shared with them plus extras to me. I am 'known' for a few dishes. Folks have even changed the name of the recipe to reflect that. Like my DD calls a dip I make (Cowboy Caviar) Mom's Cowboy Caviar. She was asked for the recipe during the holidays. On the card she put "Mom's Cowboy Cariar". That woman calls the dip by that name. This message has been edited. I share.
It's been my observation that people who won't share have "information control" issues. They use other pieces of information to control, as well. I haven't read all the replies. I probably just stepped on someone's toes. Oops. |

I do not cook much and when I do the recipies I use are simple measure and mix ones without fancy ingredients.
I once shared a recipe with my SIL and now she has "PIRATED" it and I got knocked out of bringing it to family functions because it is now "HER DISH" So I no longer share my easy, standby recipies with extended family- just my daughters. When the world gets in my face, I say, Have A Nice Day! BonJovi |

I wouldn't make a recipe like THAT--if she wants it made, SHE should make it. But, I wouldn't care if she made "my" recipe. I would just find something different to bring. |

Awhile back JaxT shared her Cowboy Soup .. as I sent it on to others . that's how I labeled it "JaxT's ....." Sheltie I think you need to rename your dish... And a large family gathering is a wonderful place to remind others that you are so pleased she( SIL) has done justice to your dish... Maybe y'all should do a throw down... Bobby Flay style!!!
I had donut holes for breakfast... not a good idea... sugar headache.. and a little testie... This message has been edited. Last edited by: Becky42, |

Becky, this is a good idea since it is bothering Shelties so much. Oh, and to find another dish to have as a 'signature' is another. Now about JaxT's Cowboy Soup. Where will I find this recipe? Do you know what I like? The sisterhood on this board. Awesome!
P.S. I share my recipes. I figure the Golden Rule applies here. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Katie a.k.a Kat, ............................................. |

I share recipes with anyone who asks for them. Most of the things I make do not have strict "recipes"... more of the DUMP variety.

I always share recipes (because as someone else said, they aren't really "mine" anyway) with the exception of two.
I don't share my butterscotch pie recipe, and I don't share my chocolate pie recipe. I don't usually make these for anyone other than family, so the issue doesn't come up. The reason I don't share these is because the butterscotch pie filling is a pain to make and most people who ask for the recipe simply don't have the cooking skills to do it right. Then they pass off something awful as being my recipe. The chocolate pie recipe I don't share because it's a very old recipe with raw eggs in it. I'm ok with eating raw eggs, been doing it all my life, but I know some people are absolutely phobic about it, so I don't share that recipe. Otherwise, I'm all for sharing recipes. I do hate it when someone else makes my recipe and makes a mess of it, then Tells everyone it was my recipe. Bloom where you are planted. |

You could say something like -- she got the recipe from you but the results are her's.
My DD made 'my' pumpkin pie recipe. Her's was so much better. She was asked about it and replied that she had gotten the recipe from me. I admitted the recipe was mine but the amazing results were the result of the cook's hands and ability. This message has been edited. I was sitting in a meeting once and the speaker suddenly said, "Marilyn, I need your chicken pot pie recipe." I said, "What?" She replied that her husband had loved the pot pie when he had it at the potluck and had been bugging her to get the recipe. I was rather embarrassed since it was such an easy throw together dish but I said I would give it to her after the meeting. Immediately, about eight other ladies asked if they could have it, too. I think it's my DH's favorite meal. I once fixed it for our church's Wednesday night "soup" dinner since they wanted something a little nicer one night when they were having a special speaker. They said they usually had 35-40 people for dinner so I figured large portions for 60 people so no one would go hungry. They only had about 35 people, but they came back for seconds and thirds and the pans were completely empty.
I'm always willing to give out my recipes but sometimes people are not willing to follow the recipe completely and they don't get the same results. One of my biggest problems is most of the time I cook without recipes and I just figure out how much food I need to fix and throw things together. It's hard to give a recipe to others when you're not sure how much they will need to fix. |

i had this happne one time in particular. I had made spaghetti for a pot luck and one lady jus LOVED it and wanted the recipe... verry simple mushrooms, bell pepper onions (sauted) itilina sausage garlic tomato sauce itilina style diced tomatoes and a bit of honey or sugar She came back and said she made it and it didn't taste anything like mine. Well she was not a scratch cooker. didn't add honey, mushrooms, itilina tomatoes (or itilian seasoning) and din't have garlic... Hmmmm, wonder why it didn't taste the same ----------------------------- "Children are the message we send to a time we will not see." I've always shared my recipes except for two. One was a green pepper jelly recipe that my friend and I looked for for 2 years and then sold at our church fair for many years. After that, we no longer made it in quantity, so now I give it out. The other one was a signature pineapple casserole recipe that someone who ran a tea room gave to me on the condition that I not pass it along.
Just realized that this will be post 1000 for me -- the odometer rolls over!! This message has been edited. Last edited by: craftyrad, |

For Wannaquilt 2
Chicken Pot Pie 1 12.5 oz. can of chicken or leftover chicken (also good with turkey or rabbit) 2 10.25 oz. cans of Cream of Chicken soup 1 16 oz. bag of frozen peas and carrots 3 large potatoes; peeled, diced, amd cooked (or use a bag of frozen southern style hash browns) 1 package Pillsbury Grand biscuits (or homemade biscuits) Break up chicken into small pieces. Mix drained cooked potatoes with the chicken, peas and carrots, and the cream of chicken soup. Season with salt and pepper. Pour into a 9 x 13 baking pan and bake at 375 for 45-55 minutes. (Til it's bubbling hot.) Bake biscuits, per package directions, and set on top of baked chicken mixture. My DH doesn't like doughy biscuits on this so I bake them separately and then put them on top before serving. |
