Salad Dressing Cake Sign In/Join
posted
2 Cups Flour
1 Cup Sugar
4 Tbs. Coco
2 Tsp. Soda
1 Cup Salad dressing or Miracle Whip
1 Cup Water
1 Tsp Vanilla
Mix together and put in 9x13" pan.
Bake 350 for about 30 min.

Next time I make it I am going to add Cold Coffee instead of water.

I told my GK's this was a world war 2 cake, because there was no shorting and eggs.

Sue your chocolate cake recipe is circa the Depression era. I know it by Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake and it's been a family favorite for decades. It's moist and dense and indeed, you don't need to have eggs or oil on hand as you do most other cake recipes. It has been my families' birthday request cake for many, many years. It's fairly recently that DH requests Apple Walnut Pie for his birthdays and our DIL makes an Italian Cream Cake for DS these past five years. I still make the Chocolate Mayonnaise Cake in sheet form or cupcakes when we crave chocolate tho. It's easy as everything is mixed in one bowl and simply wonderful!!!

Can you sub mayo for "salad dressing (assuming that means Miracle Whip)?

Hellman's Mayonnaise is what I always used and LOVED the taste. Personally, I would think Miracle Whip, w/ it's distinctive flavor, would alter the taste noticeably, but it's really a matter of personal taste.

The first time I met DH's grandparents, we had dinner at their house and they asked if I wanted chocolate cake. YUMMY. SOOO glad they didn't ask if I wanted chocolate mayo cake because I probably would have said NO!!!

Makes sense, tho, because you put oil and eggs in a cake and that's pretty much what mayo is.

Adrian, you actually use mayonaise in the cake, NOT some bottled salad dressing.
