$70.00 a bushel for Honey Crisp at the orchards or at another place they had them for 4# for $15.00.

In my part of the country these are the most popular variety and we had harsh year for apple trees.

$17 for half bushel of Golden Delicious. Usually buy Galas, but they were all killed earlier in the spring by a late freeze.

Local orchard. Not organic, but very much tree-ripened--not picked green then shipped across the country.

I stopped at the orchard on the way home yesterday and they were $1.29 per pound. I like green apples and they only had yellow delicious, but they told me that every week there would be more varieties. Nothing like good, fresh picked apples.

Sign at the farmer's market today (NE Ohio) said $15 half bushel and $28 for a bushel.....except Honey Crisp. Never did see a price for those. For just a few apples, they are $1.39 a lb.

katie, good to see you! How are you doing?

We don't have any apple orchards or farmer's markets in my area! ((sad face))
I need to plant a couple of apple trees!

I was gonna post a similar question!!! I was shocked at the price of apples at the supermarket. The MacIntosh apples were $1.99/lb. I have never seen them that expensive, ever. I bought them anyway ~ cause it's now time to treat Myself right!!!) The Delicious were $1.59/lb. I saw "Honey Crisp" apples. I have never heard of those apples before I don't think. They were expensive too. (Are they sweet, me likes sweet apples! I want to try some new apples this year! I was surprised at the prices of apples. I hope the oranges/grapefruits aren't outrageous either.

I was wondering so I goggled the USDA and, according to its website, a bushel of apples should weigh 48 pounds. So, sierramitzpls, the bushel you passed up at 15.99 actually cost .34/lb, maybe it was a better buy than you originally thought!

Those Gala apples DH bought on sale at .50/lb was have cost $24.50/bushel. Have to say this chaotic weather year HAS caused a lot of problems for all types of fruit, vegetables and grains! Frown

Sale this week on Honeycrisp - $1.99 a pound - $1 off.

All fruit and produce from USA "bread basket" will be higher than normal due to the heat and drought this year.

Lots of apple orchards lost their crops due to the high temperatures in March and then the cool down in April. So in my area prices are up. Very few varieties are less than $2 per pound. One local store has tried to package everything in plastic bags and pretend they are on sale. They are smaller apples and often aren't in good shape. I buy larger apples as I need them. I waste less and feel that I am getting a better value.
