I'm telling you! It's dangerous out there gathering pears!!!

When those hard pears hit you in the head they just about knock you out!! I swear I have a bruise on the back of my right shoulder where one got me this evening...I haven't look yet, but I KNOW that there's a bruise!! Believe me! Big Grin

Went out early the other morning to gather up what hit the ground and still had my glasses on (I wear contact lenses 99% of my waking hours)...pear hits me in the face and hits my glasses. I looked around and couldn't see out of the left lens. The lens was on the ground.

I need a hard hat and a pair of safety glasses just to gather pears! You know...a Kevlar vest might be needed...think I'll talk to one of the deputies at work. Or maybe just take the Smith & Wesson out and start target practice on those little hard dev-ils!!!

Thanks, but I've decided to wear my motorcycle helmet. It has a full face shield. I'll be protected from the top of my head to the bottom of my jaw.

May put on the jacket with the soft body armour too...

KYIS,

Thanks for spilling my coffee on the keyboard this morning. So nice to start the day with a good laugh.

At least the squirrels aren't chucking them down on you. The local HD club will love a pic or two of you suited up to pick pears!

Watch out for falling pears!

I was gonna mention coconuts but chairlady beat me to it. When we lived in Miami, I had just bought a new car, and a darn coconut fell on the hood and put a dent in it! Censored

I guess any good size fruit falling on your head is gonna hurt. A helmet sounds like it would solve the problem. LOL!

Sherry,
Do you get lots of bees as well? We once had a pear tree and the drops would split and the juiciness just attracted swarms of bees.

Yes! Bees, wasps, and ants. I think that the bees and wasps are such gluttons that the last thing on their mind is popping you. They are too worried about their next bite.

I clear out the dropped pears every time I go to the trees. Sometimes I drop the bucket on the pear to get rid of the bees/wasps, then grab the stem and toss the pear - the bees/wasps follow them. (We have 10 acres and no close neighbors - I just want the pear and it's snackers gone from my space!)

Then I start gathering pears. I've had some near misses when there's been a bad spot on a pear hanging and a wasp has been on that pear. But so far...knock on wood...no stings.

The ants are the worst thing because they are on the ground. I go out in my sandals and have bites on every toe...and up to my knee. Spray benadryl is a blessing! Hmmm...need to wear boots too.
