Petland has been linked to puppy mills (article published today). I personally never shop there because they sell dogs but I thought I'd pass this on in case others do and to make them aware.

If a store sells puppies on any regular basis they are getting them from mills, no matter what they tell you.

No ethical breeder will sell to a pet shop. When I registered my kennel name I had to sign a breeders COE that explicitly stated that no pups would be sold to any broker or pet shop.

PetSmart and Doctor Pet Center are the two major offenders here. And you are so right, as their employees are trained to sell you a story about the "wonderful" breeders they get their animals from. No Puppy mills.....uh huh, right. Roll Eyes

"PetSmart and Doctor Pet Center are the two major offenders here."

In my area, Petsmart allows local rescues to keep pets (cats, kittens) in cages in their stores and host adoption events to adopt pets to screened adopters. I personally volunteered with a rescue and we did adoption days at Petsmart. The animals were not from puppy mills that we adopted out.

Hi Heather, PetCo does the same thing here with rescues, but does NOT sell puppys and kittens.

PetSmart here still does sell them however. If they are allowing local rescues to show their ones in need, that's great, but if they are also selling the pups and kittens....then I would avoid supporting their store on principal. Maybe the store management policies are different in areas and states?

In our state, it has been YEARS since our pet stores have been able to sell dogs or cats. I am shocked to see that many states still allow it. Our state is also very diligent on locating and shutting down puppy mills, of which I am happy to report.

In my area (both in Florida and Ontario), PetSmart does not sell cats or dogs. They have adoptions every so often but it is strictly adoption . .. not a sale. I'm surprised to know they sell pets in some locations.

mgkimball, We REALLY try to shut them down and NE is better than several of our close neighboring states about regulating and control of the puppy breeding businesses. Many of the organizations that I have been involved with over the years have lobbyed continuously to get them shut down. I think it has helped many of the conditions, but we still have far to go.

Those "wonderful" breeders they tell you about are usually backyard so-called breeders. They are still breeding for greed, not to make the breed better.

Just because they are doing it out of their home doesn't make it right. And don't fall for the old "they only have one litter a year" line.

Conrad, I mean this in the kindest way, but are you absolutely CERTAIN that Petsmart sells puppy mill dogs in your area?

Their whole philosophy is built on adoption of animals, as I think you can see on their website.

It just seems very strange that one store would be allowed to sell them.

BoPeep, Thank you for being kind. Wink
You (and Heather C) certainly are right about that. I am sure they USED to sell puppies and kittens (that I do recall), but the one store we have here is WAY out north and I honestly have not been in it for several years or more. It is just too far out. It is too early to make a call and check, but I am thinking you are going to be right. I am really, really happy with the stores that are being responsible.

My bad....I apologize, Sorry PetSmart. Red Face

Anyone wanting a dog (or cat) can certainly go to Petfinders and choose from a variety of pure breds and mixed. That being said, I also can say that the Petsmart in my area has adoption days for dogs, they even have specific weeks that they have great dane adoptions. They hold some for greyhounds etc. Cats are generally there for adoption daily. The pet stores that "sell" should be avoided.

PETSMART? Does anyone have a link to any of these stores selling puppies from mills?

Many years ago I was the bookkeeper for a large chain of Pet Stores in the Tx and NM area. All their dogs were from puppymills and the owner stated all large Pet stores in Ca. Or, Tx, Co, NM, Tx , AZ and Utah (at that time) all bought from the same mills. This was 12 years ago. I know for a fact when I called these "breeders" they would tell me that they supply many Pet Stores all across the country with dogs and these were common large Pet Stores most all have been to. You do not need a link to know this is fact. It is common knowledge that a true Breeder does not sell to a pet store.

Until very recently I worked for PetSmart as a Pet Care Specialist in fact I was a lead. I can tell you in no uncertain terms that PetSmart DOES NOT sell puppies or cats. They work with local rescues to help find homeless animals find loving homes...in fact they are well over 3 MILLION adoptions since they started the program and that is a little over 10 years ago!!
