June has shut down computer a few times by stepping on button on power strip. All the outlets on that one are filled with plugs.

Have a second strip that sewing machine and surger are plugged into, that sits on window sill. Has several open spaces with nothing plugged in. Since she has claimed almost every sill as her domain, wondering if there's a danger there?? I put a strip of heavy-duty masking tape over open outlets... in case she steps on and claws go in holes??

Wondering if I'm just being overly protective, or should I put a stip of nice heavy cardboard over open holes?

thatchairlady...I use one of these. Everything can be plugged into mine including any cable things. It is enclosed and can hide away all cords and such so that kitty cannot unplug or turn anything off

Enclosed power strip

Thanks Sheltie! I've never seen one of those, and it is now on my "must have" list. Smile

Another option - There are plastic plugs designed to go in electric outlets to keep toddler fingers out of an electric outlet. That would protect your cat better and would be easier to remove if you need the outlet. I've never needed them, but I suspect they are carried by hardware stores and baby supply places.

(Masking tape is easy to remove for the first few days after it is used. But after a couple of months it leaves a residue you may never be able to get rid of.)

yeehawterri, it is the best thing to have I tell ya. I have one in my computer room and since it closes nothing is exposed. I have everything plugged into mine including my scanner/fax/printer. No cords anywhere and no way kitty can hit the disconnect button or get near the outlets to maybe get shocked.

I am a little confused as to how plastic outlet covers would be better then an enclosed power strip

I guess if she just wanted to cover the outlets that would be one thing...but I see she also wants the kitty to stop jumping on the power strip and turning it off. My suggestion covers all her concerns

I love that power strip!

I've had places where I ended up hanging the power strip from the wall...kinda hokey, but I had some of those L-shaped screws and used them to hold it vertically on the wall.

My power strips are on the floor. I've never had a pet bother them. But I've shut my self down in mid sentence by hitting the switch with my foot.

The only advantage to the outlet covers is price. But for many of us that's a big issue.

Assuming you have desk or table that is being used, one can also mount the power strips underneath the table top or even on the back side of a desk. We have a couple strips mounted under the long desk/table in the office, all it took was a few short screws. MOST of the cords are gathered together and hung on cuphooks with twist ties underneath also. Wink

I want my power strips a little more accesible than that. On the side of a desk might work could damage the finish, under or behind is too hard to reach.

My house is up on a ridge. Over the years I've lost a tv and a washing machine to lightning - apparently it hit a power line near the house. I have my computer on 2 power strips in series. The first is plugged into the wall and just brings the outlet out from behind the desk. The 2nd is plugged into the first. I plug all my computer parts into the 2nd. That way when a storm threatens I can unplug all my stuff by pulling the 2nd strip plug out of the 1st strip.
