My DS and DIL are having their first child in July. They have a cat named Sidney that is about 6 years old. This cat is not friendly to anyone but them. When we visit he will bite and scratch at us when we try to pet him.
Last night DS called and ask can Sidney come and stay at our house. We have 2 cats and 1 dog, golden retriever at our house. Well I said of course my four legged grandbaby can come stay with us. Now I am really worried about how to handle this. Popcorn our calico is the boss of our animals and I don't think she is going to like Sidney. Any advice would be a big help!!!!!!!!thanks in advance. |

Is it a permanent move to your house? My son's girlfriend adopted a cat much like your daughter's cat and over time he has calmed down in his new environment. Don't you think the animals will work out their pecking order on their own? Unless they're actually fighting vs. establishing who's dominant, I would keep a watch on them so nobody gets hurt, but I'd let them have a few dominance spats to see whether they figure things out on their own or not. If they don't, then you'll have to reconsider re-homing the cat to somebody without other pets who is willing to put up with cat-titude!

You may want to keep Sydney apart from your other pets, until he gets use to the smells and noises of your house. I usually place a screen door so they can safely smell each others.
You may want to try a couple of Feliway diffusers in the house. Some say it works very well. Thyme also has a good point about letting them settle their "dispute", as long as none of them get hurt. |

Thanks. We don't know how long. DIl is afraid that Sidney will hurt the baby. We will have to see if she changes her mind as the baby grows and has a chance to be around the pets when they visit us.

I think it may take a littel time for the cat to adjust but in time they will all be ok. As far as your DIL afraid of the cat around the baby chances are that cat wont go near that baby so I think she should at least give the cat a chance and if it does bother the baby then give it to you. Most animals will suprise you when a new baby comes. Trust me all mine had to adjust.

Thanks everyone.
DS called Saturday "Mom, I am on my way with Sidney. I will be there by 6PM." YEA I GOT MY MOTHERS DAY WISH. Sat. night we had a lot of hissing and growling going on but no fights. I had forgotten how big and beautiful Sidney is. Popcorn our little calico is still the boss of the house. A short story from Sun. afternoon. Sidney is under the end table hissing and Popcorn is about six feet away hissing. In walks Scout golden retriever, She goes to Sidney and touches noses then walks to Popcorn and touches noses. Lies down between them and just looks from one to the other. Everything gets quiet. Scout is the peacemaker I guess. Judy |
