Peppy is the 5 month old or so kitten that dh asked to bring home the day that Pali died. Dh said that while the kitten couldn't replace Mitten or Pali, he was still a kitten who needed a good home and who was unadoptable in his present health condition. Dh had been working on this little guy and his siblings since they were very young kittens and all were ready to be adopted out except this one who would need major surgery to make him pee like a girl.

So he's been here about a month or so in fairly good shape except for peeing spots (drips) all over. Dh said he wanted Peppy to be a bit older for the surgery. That changed today when Peppy's peeing drips were all bloody. Peppy left for the hospital about 15 minutes ago where he'll be sedated tonight to at least remove some scar tissue (2 previous surgeries) with the hopes of making him more comfortable and, from what I understand, will have the major surgery tomorrow.

Please send Peppy your thoughts and prayers that he makes it through the surgery and that it is a success. If this doesn't do what it is supposed to do, dh said the future does not look good for Peppy.

Well, ok, an update. That was quick. I had just pressed Post Now when the phone rang. It was dh with the update news:

The scar tissue was right at the very end of Peppy so as soon as dh got it opened, the bloddy urine just flowed out. He'll stay at the clinic tonight on pain medicine and whatever else and get the big surgery tomorrow. Dh said he was glad the urine came out so that Peppy's bladder will have a chance to go back to being normal. He also said there were crystals.

So, it is good news so far. One hurdle over, one more to go.

Thank you, Everyone, for your thoughts and prayers. Here's the update:

Dh said this AM that Peppy had developed more blockage during the night but that it still wasn't as bad as it was last night when he went to the hospital.

The major surgery occured this afternoon and went reasonably well. Dh said he thinks Peppy has a 90% chance of full recovery though he's seen other cases that looked great after the surgery that didn't do well. He said it is critical that Peppy not lick his area until it is completely healed in about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks. He'll be able to come home tomorrow and will have to be confined I think until he is completely healed. He'll have to wear the radar collar, too, until healing is finished.

Dh said Peppy had a whole lot of crystals that he and a specialist didn't really attribute to diet but rather infection and Peppy's own bladder which hasn't been able to eliminate properly. I asked him about the dry Purina One that I've been mixing with the dry Science Diet, perhaps that caused the heavy crystal formation, and dh said that the other cats would have problems if that had been the case. (When we were at the store the other night and I had a large bag of the regular Purina Cat Chow in my cart, dh said to put it back because it will cause problems with the cats. So I did put it back and got the One which dh said would be ok.)

In any event, I don't think I am going to let Peppy have any of the Purina One. His urine wasn't noticably bloody until I bought the big bag of it and started mixing it with the regular Science Diet. I know I'm not the Drs but I don't want to take any chances even though "they" think it wasn't the cause.

So, it's a good update. I am relieved. I'll write again tomorrow at the latest after Peppy gets home. Have to go out tonight (or send dh and the kids if dh gets home in time) to get the Yesterday's News for Peppy's litter pan.

Thank you all, again.

"Charcoalsmom," So happy to hear that things went well with Peppy today; will be keeping him in my thoughts and hoping for a full recovery.

As an aside, I have been feeding regular Purina Cat Chow for years with no problems. What is the difference between it and Purina One?

I obviously want the best for my cats but buying the food sold only at the vet's office is out of the question. Our local grocery store does carry Purina One and I will switch if there is a good reason to do so.

IR, I asked dh and he said it was the quality of ingredients. When I aksed him to be a bit more specific, he said better digestability and better elimination as a result.

He had said previously that Purina Cat Food is good quality food so it might be something like good, better, best? Confused

Just a very brief update as I'm about to run out of battery.

Peppy is home safe, sound, and in good spirits. He doesn't like being confined to the one room but he has to be for now. He's got a radar collar on which he doesn't like but that's another "has to be."

He's actually rested most of the day minus being excited the first half an hour or so that he was home. He's on pain meds and some sort of antibiotics, I think.

So thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and I'll continue to update as needed.

Hugs to everyone. Smile
