I saw this on another board and thought I'd spread the word, just in case...

Mars Pet Care is recalling bags of Pedigree Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites dog food.

A salmonella scare has forced Mars Petcare US to recall 100 of its 20-pound bags of PEDIGREE Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites sold at some Albertsons in Southern California and Las Vegas, Nevada.

The company also makes Nutro pet food, which scores of consumers nationwide blame for the recent illnesses — and even deaths — of their dog and cats.

Nutro products, however, are not included in this recall.

Mars said a “component” that tested positive for salmonella was inadvertently shipped to its Tracy, California, plant and used in the production of 100 bags of PEDIGREE pet food.

The affected bags have the “best by” dates of July 7, 2009.

Product: PEDIGREE® Complete Nutrition Small Crunchy Bites
Size: 20-pound bags
UPC Code: 23100 14719
Lot Code: 830BFCAT02
Best Buy Date: 07/2009
Best Buy Date Location: Back of bag
Affected Stores: Albertsons locations in Southern California and Las Vegas.

Gentlewind - the recall is only for a dog food sold in Las Vegas and in Southern California. I doubt you travel that far to buy dog food.

I thought all the ingredients for pet food were cooked as part of the manufacturing process. I guess I know less about pet food manufacturing than I thought I did.

I think that they are concerned that there is contamination in packaging/storing/handling/etc after the food is made. I agree with you- Salmonella is killed at about 170F, so it shouldn't be an issue in manufacturing.

This is why I do not feed thei kind of food to my babies. I only use Halo. It is more expensive, but it is also all natural (considered a holistic food). I have seen it turn pancreatitis around in one of my older dogs, never been a recall on it, and it has improved all 9 of my babies health since they started on it. I have less pooh to clean up and their coats are shiny and very soft which cuts down on grooming and their teeth are perfect. I live by the philosophy that you get what you pay for. No pedigree or such for my babies. I have always wondered why Pedigree is so popular. Is it the price and availability?

Well, just the opposite of you, SC, I've raised all my dogs, all my foster puppies and adults, on Pedigree, for almost 15 years now, and they have all been healthy, with shiny coats and good teeth. It would take a major issue for me to change. Smile

oh BoPeep. After reading what you posted I feel so bad. I have dogs that all come to me already sick with medical issues. You have dogs that work. I know many people swear by Pedigree and find it very good for their dogs. I am sorry if I sounded judgemental...I honestly did not mean to.

If the kibble was contanimated during the mfg process or enroute to a retailer, the recall will expand beyond that relitively small geographic area.
Every food product sold in the US has specific tracking info printed on the label for
this very reason. Don't panic. Read the lable/ if you purchased that batch, return it to the retailer for a refund.
My retailer doesn't quibble about whether or not I return a full or partial bag (I don't buy Pedigree although it's as good as many others)

This is important, so I thought I'd bump it up.

I fed Chachi pedigree but we kept it in another container so don't have the original bag...probably best if we dump it.

tessa, you are absolutely right, the recall will expand and you are very welcome. Its important to give each other info that we might not otherwise hear about.

m2d, I would definitely toss it. Better to be safe than sorry.

Is it just the twenty pound bags? I'm pretty sure we bought the forty pound.

much2dew, I would still toss it. Why don't you try giving Krypto something else, like Halo, Wellness or Merrick? Check the ingredients in what you are purchasing. I know this is a hot topic here when it comes to what food you should feed, but I believe in giving them better quality foods. Meaning no corn, meat by-products, gluten and fillers.
For the future...just don't throw the bags out after storing the food.

Krypto has an appt. Tuesday with a new vet. I will see what he says. Chach always like Pedigree and our old vet said it was fine, so honestly I never thought much about it.

I'm not too familiar with any of the brands you mentioned so I have some research to do.
