Some of our rescues had this problem. When we started giving them fresh water everyday, it helped a lot. Also, if they get dry food all the time, it can cause constipation. If you will give them fiber foods, and wet foods, this will help. You might also get your pet checked to make sure there is not a medical problem causing this. Good luck. Smile

You might also try giving them a stool softener for a few days - it can be mixed into their food. Or a tbs. of mineral oil should help.

How is your dog doing?
I'd go with veg oil or min oil before I started a chemical.
Also, try a good brand 'senior' dog food.
Is your dog eating less? Why do you think he's constipated? Is he squatting and nothing comes out or is he just leaving small amounts? Is the poo really REALLY firm/hard/dry?

What did your dog's VET recommend?

Intermittent constipation can usually be traced back to diet & exercise. Too much people food? processed store bought "treats"? canned food or soft kibble? Inadequate exercise?

If your pupper is given mostly dry kibble, has access to unlimited water & daily exersice, often adding a weight appropriate amount of daily olive oil to it's diet prevents bowel probs.

Often posting here produces best intentions, not appropriate Vet adivce. Please have your pupper examined & treated after history & exam by a live Vet

Mary, When my Tippie gets like that, I mix some olive oil in his food and it does the job.

Every know and than this happenes. She seems more regular now. I did get the mineral oil and it did the trick. Also have added more fiber to her diet. So far so good.

My vet recommended canned pumpkin. I have used it very successfully and my dogs actually love it. I mix it with their food or feed it to them "straight." I have a 114# German Shepherd and the vet said I could give him 2-3 cans/day. Be prepared for their stool to be an orange color.

I agree with Tessa 100% here.
I'm glad YOU mentioned the olive oil. I use it for EVERYTHING but someone said THAT was harmful to dogs, too, so I just do what I know to work.
I sure hope nobody on this board takes our suggestions as a REPLACEMENT for going to their vet!!?? OMG?! I never thought about that.

A little more exercise might help, and it won't hurt. It doesn't have to be hard exercise. An extra 200 feet of walking may shake things loose.

Beyond that, ask your vet. I wouldn't even give olive oil without discussing it with the vet.
