I know that this does not really go here, but you all are so helpful, I thought I would try a post and see what I hear back.

I am going hiking in the Tetons in a few weeks and would like to buy a walking pole. Do you all have any suggestions as to what brand is the best?

I am also thinking about using it for when I walk my dogs in the woods, as the terrain is a little rough and I just don't seem to have the balance that I used to have. I hate getting older!

Thanks for any help.

our expert hiker, sharon s, is over on the t2t board but she is away right now doing part of the appalachian trail. she's been gone for about 2 wks so should be back soon. keep lurking over there and when you see her name pop up send her a pm with your question.

They can be very helpful on rough, uneven terrain, going up or down slopes and wet rocky areas. I was lucky to find a suitable natural stick up in the mountains last summer, when walking trails with the dogs.

Then I purchased an inexpensive one at a Park Visitor center for twelve dollars, that works fine for me. But there are all kinds and you should find one that is a comfortable height for you (often shoulder height?) has a nice grip and feel and the right weight/sturdiness of material for your use. Easily replaceable rubber tip would be important, especially on a metalic pole. I believe there are also collapsable ones, that take up less room in cars and busses.

I too thought it was going to be about the insect LOL. I thought i was going to have to ask my son, the bug nut, a question.

Maggiejoe, now you know that if Sharon had a piece of wood in her hand she'd have to make something out of. She wouldnt be able to help herself LOL

CAAS, if your Grand Teton hiking vacation will be with a guide, you might want to consult him/her. I've seen many new & old, plain or beautifully carved wood sticks, but none were a "brand".
Enjoy your high country trekk!
(sooo jealous!)
