It's not been a good "doggy day" . . . Couper swallowed paper towel and now I noticed two blisters inside Jake's ear. His ear is somewhat inflammed looking. I put some ear cleaner in it and he shook his head. I tried to clean it out but nothing came out. He is not scratching and it doesn't seem to be bothering him but I'm wondering what would cause small blisters inside his ear. He is prone to yeast infections but normally his ears smell when he has one. This time his ears smell normal.

Hi PK1..if you are at your FLA home it could very well be ant bites. I don't think they affect most animals like they can with humans but a bite could cause a blister type bump. I know for me it hurts when I get bit but then doesn't bother me for a couple of days...then all heck breaks out...I will itch like crazy and the bite will look like a bump with fluid...kind of like a blister but more like a zit.

All that to say...keep an eye on Jake and if he starts itching you can give him benadryl...or the cheap stuff. Dogs can take up to 1mg/pound of body weight. My dogs get itchy after the lawn is mowed so I give them benadryl for a day which keeps them from scratching and licking like crazy. All of them weigh from 65-85 pounds and usually 2-25mg pills is enough to help. It does make them a little sleepy tho, not wasted sleepy but just not a whole lot of energy sleepy.

Debi, yes we are in Florida. Jake was rolling on the grass to scratch his back I think that perhaps he got bit at that time from a red/fire ant. It doesn't seem to be bothering him . . . he's not scratching or rubbing his ear but it is definitely red looking and he has two blisters (that I can see). I've been flushing out his ears twice a day with ear cleaner in hopes that if any red ants managed to get into his ear canal, the liquid will drown them. I didn't know that dogs could take Benadryl. If his ear appears to be getting itchy, I will get some for him. Thanks

Pk, I'm sorry to hear about Jake. I would call the vet and ask if thats what it could be. Also, before giving Benadryl, please ask the vet to find out how much you can give him and if its the children's or adult.
I hope it gets better soon.

Hi Yve...I only know the dosage because my vet told me. My first dog had some allergies and the first time I got benadryl from the vet it was $1 a pill. Luckily I have a great vet that understood me not wanting to spend that much since it is the same stuff I take for my allergies. She is who told me 1mg/pound is OK. Plus if you look on line at several of the vet info web sites, ones run by vet schools, all the info is the same.

I can now see more than the two original blisters which means it is probably not fire ant bites. I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow afternoon.

Debi, I was very surprised to learn Jake's ear problems are actually yeast. He has had yeast infections more times than I care to remember but when he does, his ears always smell and have a ton of dark brown gunk. The vet did a swab so I have no reason to doubt him; just very surprised at the results. He's given him a medication we've never used before: Mometamax. After 10 days, we are then to use a mixture that supposedly prevents ear yeast infections. It's Conofite 1% with 2 ml dex. I also asked him about the blisters (which are now almost gone) and he said it is caused by the infection irritating the skin. So I am very happy I took him to the vet because I don't think yeast would have gone away on it's own.

Hey PK,
How's Jake's ear?
My sis lives in Englewood, FL and has two dogs, even a husky!!(I say that because I normally think of Huskies needing cold Alaskan type weather.) She's found ticks on them but luckily no ant bites, spider bites,or GATOR bites. Smile

Hi Brusco, His ear is improving . . . not perfect but definitely improving. He only has one blister left and his ears are starting to return to a pink color. Definitely not the symptoms he normally gets with a yeast infection. Your sister is probably about 2 hours north of me! After finding a tick last year, my guys now wear tick collars. And we're keeping our distance from Gators. There are three young ones residing in a pond about 5 houses down the street from me. Doesn't exactly give me a warm fuzzy feeling to know they are that close but they are under 3 feet long (don't ask me who actually has the job of measuring them!!) so they are not allowed to be removed. We back onto a huge natural preserve so I'm kind of used to being surrounded by things I don't really want to run into and I definitely never leave the dogs alone outside. In Ontario, I also back onto a huge forest but the forest is more "dog friendly" so our dogs enjoy the freedom of being outdoors (even on their own) when we live in Ontario. But their "mom" hates the cold and snow so they have to "suffer Smile the Florida lifestyle. Every year they pack their beach ball, towel and swimming trunks and head south to hang out with "American" dogs who bark with a funny accent. Smile

HAHA,,funny.
Oh, you kinda go with the honkers, huh? I'd LOVE to have a winter home in FL. Just visiting sis for a week once a year is just a tease.
She has one of those "3 foot" gators right in her back yard. She's hoping it never learns to climb chain link fencing.
Are you by Oscala by any chance? That's where Linda and Pat Parelli have their farm. (He's the "natural horseman" in the horse world)
My sister works at a kennel in Englewood, part time. Do you ever board your dogs? It would be really weird if you've met her!
Off topic,,sorry readers.
