How many cats do you have and how many litterboxes do you have? How often do you clean the litterboxes? Just curious! I have 2 cats/1 littebox. I clean it 2-3 times a day. I met this co-worker who said she had 9 cats & 2 dogs. She said she didn't walk her dogs, she just lets them go by her house and she said she cleans it up. How disgusting I thought to myself. If you can't even be bothered to walk your dogs, I wondered (to myself) how often she cleaned the cat litterboxes & how many she had. How many do you have?! Thanks!
7 cats, 3 litterboxes- down from 4. Scooped twice a day and emptied, bleached, dried in the sun, and filled wth fresh litter when I can smell them after scooping- usually about every 10 days.
Six cats and six litterboxes ~ scooped daily. Completely emptied, scrubbed and re-filled with fresh litter every two weeks or so. Four of them are extra large - 12 inches tall x 18 inches wide with litter about 5 inches deep.
I have had 2 cats in the house at a time with one litterbox. At present, 1 cat and 1 litter box. It's cleaned at least once a day, sometimes twice, and disinfected every weekend. Just a questions, do you have your litter boxes in different areas of the house and does a particular cat always use a particular litter box? Are these actual brand name litter boxes or do you use some other type of container? My mother has a very large cat. He outgrew his litter box. We ended up finding a large sweater box for him.
3 cats, 1 litter box. However, my old lady (age 15)has NEVER used the box, she goes outside. She will eat, then go to the back door and ask to go out, do her thing in the back garden, then come right back in.
The other 2 are fine with the box, I scoop every day, change completely every week.
When we had more cats several years ago we had 1 box for every 2 cats. I HATED that part since there really are so few places for a litter box here. We had 3 boxes lined up in the cellar.

We have the giant plastic storage container for our master bath. A covered litterbox without the lid in our laundry room, and a dome shaped covered litterbox in the guest bath.
We did away with the lid on the one in the laundry room when we adopted our blind cat as we were told blind cats don't like covered litterboxes. However, he uses the other covered litterbox just like the other ones do.
The main litterbox is in the laundry room- they seem to prefer that one.
All our cats are indoors only but a time or two silly Bert has gotten out. When he comes in he makes a beeline for the litterbox. He's never figured out he can go in the yard.
I would love to be able to have one more litterbox,but we just don't have anyplace else to put one!
3 cats, 3 boxes. 2 boxes are in a large bathroom upstairs and get the most use. The one in the laundry room downstairs only gets used when I am down there for an extended amount of time - usually during a tornado watch. The upstairs boxes get scooped 2 or 3 times every day. Downstairs I check twice each week, but rarely find anything.
I have a couple of spare boxes that I use when one of the boxes needs to be washed.

One of the "extra-large" boxes is in the guest bedroom bathroom up-stairs hidden behind the door - the Maine Coons' room. Both are large cats so they need the extra space!
Two more extra-large boxes plus the standard type are in the laundry room upstairs ~ I switched one extra-tall one (12") for the regular 4" in case our eldest doesn't want to jump so high. So far the shorter one has been left unused ~ guess cats like their privacy!
The 5th litterbox is in the master bathroom where Haystack sleeps at night - a regular size - and the 6th one is in the garage apartment where Tigger, an abandoned feral lives right now, don't worry, it's air-conditioned, heated with windows and window seats! I've been switching out the shorter/larger ones so she will be comfortable using either one when she moves into the house which won't happen until Beets moves on ....
To answer the question re brand, etc.??? I have bought the extra large containers with lids and then re-cycled the lids - none of my cats like them! And do they use all of them - well, most of them prefer to use "their" own boxes but they also use the others as well ~ any port in a storm you know!
Got first cat, from county shelter, after a LONG line of BIG goofy dogs. June is little over 3 yo. When I got her... TEENY! Sister was my "go-to" person for cat advice. Said shut her in bathroom, with litter box, water and food for first few days when I went to work. NO problems there. She also suggested, since house is a split level (NOT huge at all, but some mileage for a kitten) that I have 2 litter boxes, at least initially. Also advised not to go CHEAP on litter... went middle of the road price-wise initially. I buy Cat's Pride at Family Dollar... about $1.50 less than W-mart or any place else for 10 lb bag.
In hind-sight, woulda rescued 2 kittens at the same time. Have a stray that shows up at sliding door from time to time and June loses her little mind?? Can't imagine her being a very nice "big sister"??

You never know, "thatchairlady," June just might be very happy to have another one of her own kind to spend time with while you are gone ~ give it a try but only if you are willing to take care of a 2nd furry-family member.
Let the stray in (when June is locked into another room), let the new cat explore the area and get his/her scent on you; then let June out ~ bet you will be surprised at the reaction.
After the initial hissing and such, don't be surprised to find them cuddled up together the next morning....
I have 4 cats, 2 outside and 2 inside. The 2 outside ones come in, look around then they want to go back outside. I have two litter boxes for the 2 inside cats. I scoop them every day and empty them out about ever 2 weeks. I used the kind of litter that I get at the super market, whatever that is.

I have 2 cats and my DD who moved back last fall has one. We have two large covered litter boxes. They are cleaned every other day. But they are kept in the cat run on the side of the house with access from our bathroom. My DD's cat occasionally uses the garden area of the run to do her business. The run is 6 feet by 10 feet with corner shelves at different levels so they can climb. Half next to the house has decking and the rest is garden. The cats spend a lot of time in there.
