adventure at animal shelter today!! and do ya need help with vet issues??
Animal shelter where June, the cat, adopted ME has a free rabie's clinic. Only one day a month and for 1 HOUR... people are lined up about an hour ahead of time. They have a local vet who volunteers his time (and shots). The program is very efficiently run. There are shelter workers who walk around with clipboards so all your paperwork is done ahead of time.

Didn't think I was even gonna be able to make it... had been less than successful at "sneaking" June?? It was about 2:30 when I caught her a bit off-guard and put her in carrier. Clinic was scheduled for 3-4 this afternoon. Maybe 20 people already in line, but I knew the line would really move once they actually started giving shots.

While standing in line, chatting with other per owners, SOMETHING started happening at the far end of parking lot!! Hear a dog YELPING and then see a guy tryiing to PRY one pit (maybe 80-90 lb) off another (maybe 50 lbs)! Another guy lying on the blacktop trying to pull smaller dog away.

Once the dogs were separated... and no apparent serious injuries to smaller dog... everybody I was standing with agreed that unless you have a people/animal friendly dog... NOT the place for it!

Ended up guy who jumped in was NOT the owner of either dog... CRAZY, in my book. I was just glad to see the larger dog AWAY from where people would be exiting after shots. As line started moving, a woman was pretty much dragged across the parking lot by smaller dog... giggling and saying "this dog is gettin on my nerves"!?!

Have had dogs whose breed had "bad reps" in the past... Dobies, then Rotts, and last another Dobie. NONE ever showed any aggression other than when someone they didn't know was at the door... Who are YOU, and WHAT are you doing at MY house?? When I had the Rotts, they had a "posse" of kids along our normal walk route. The LOOK on parents faces when the kids called out their names and came running... priceless! Last Dobie was a sweetheart that was afraid of EVERYTHING!! But Pits scare me to pieces!

This free program for rabies vaccinations has been wonderful for me. While chatting with other pet owners, found out about a microchip program... $11 for fixed pets and $22 for unfixed... next one in early October. If you're having difficulties keeping your pet up-to-date, vet-wise, I'd advise you to stop in or contact your county animal shelter to see what's available.

Well, you had an interesting day.

That is really a good price on the microchip but check what company it is through. Some of them are more expensive if you have to make contact changes.
