I have a Beagle and a Bassett. I have an area around my patio that is rock instead of flowers and landscaping to make it "dog friendly" I have misc sized flower pots sitting in this area with flowers planted, but my beagle things he can hike his leg and just pee all over my plants! it makes this area smell of urine and I'm not sure how to get rid of the smell and get him to quit doing it! Is there anythign I can spray around the area to deter him from peein in my flowers? My Bassett is very lazy, and she won't even go out in the yard to pee 1/2 the time, she will just squat on the patio and let it flow! this makes me sick! I really love to have company over to have cookouts on the patio (having one this Saturday as a matter of fact) but I need some help/suggestions to get my dogs to quit doing this!
Some questions come to mind. First, if the area is made to be "dog friendly", why do you have the forbidden flower pots there? Could you move them? Also, leash walking would help you get the basset off the patio. I think you can buy stuff to repel dogs, but between rain and watering, or hosing the patio, I don't know how effective it would be. Good luck!

Sandra - the reason we put the rock around the patio is we felt this would be dog freindly verse just dirt or mulch that they could dig in. We have a patio, and then the rock and just beyond the rock we have a little picket fence as a decorative touch, there is a walkway out into the back yard.
Also I forgot to mention, if i put a collar and leash on my Bassett she will sit down and not move, she is STUBBORN, she hates to take walks, shes a big lazy girl. Our vet thinks its quite humerous how much of a Bassett Hound additude she has! but the peeing on the patio is far from funny!
I was searching and came across a couple of things. One was a motion activated sprinkler. Translated cheaper and handy, a high powered water gun or hose! Also vinegar or cayenne pepper was mentioned. I found some stuff called Biodefend repellant that has pepper and vinegar in it.

most of my yard is landscaped with flower beds, and I walked all my rescued pups through the yard many times, praising them when they did their business in the right place, scolding them when they did not. I also have used a squirt gun when they wandered into a bed...it does not hurt anything but their ego. One of my Jack Russells sounds as lazzy as your bassett...but he will leave the patios and decks IF I walk with him. Here is a pic of our yard...not too bad for having 3 grown rescues, huh? (patting herself on the back! )

Obviously your dogs do not agree. As for your male hiking his leg on your potted flowers, that's an EZ fix - taller pots!
You puppers' breeds are often considered stubborn, but who's the boss? old habits may be difficult to break but before you buy a maybe quick deterrent,IMHO you and your dogs would benefit from a retraining program

In my experience dogs will always go where they or another dog have gone. In other words where they smell urine. Unless you are regularly flushing that area with your hose, they probably think it's quite okay to go there.
If it really stinks, go buy some Nature's Miracle at the pet store. It's an enzyme cleaner that I think is probably the best as it will eat the organic matter. You could just squirt it over where they have been going (including the sides of the pots and patio) to get rid of the smell and then hose it all away. Then you might find a repellent to encourage them to find a new spot to call their own.
My dog is a bit stubborn and a bit of a princess too. I made an area where the grass isn't so hot anyway by covering it will smooth gravel and she took to that pretty quickly. I guess because what ever they do sort of leaves the surface pretty quick it's a little cleaner to them. It's also really easy to clean with the hose. It took a bit to get her used to it, but it sure beats her going on the lawn.
someone told me to put moth balls in the planters, but I'm worried about the dogs eating them. Would that work and would dogs eat them? Casey acts as though her feet will melt if she gets into the grass and it's the least bit wet, so she potty's on the patio occasionally. Fortuntely, in Phoenix, the grass doesn't stay wet for very long.
