I switched to the scooping-type litter about 2 months ago. I feel it is cleaner overall. My cat, however, must still be used to the old litter and scratches and scratches to bury it and tears the liner up which really makes a mess when I go to clean her box.

When I cleaned her box 2 days ago, I put down a thin piece of cardboard (thick paper really) and then the litter. I have scooped since and the liner seems intact.

This is not that big of a deal - but thought I would pass it on in case anyone else has the same problem....

Just curious.....what is the reason for using a litter bag with scoopable litter?
I'm not trying to be dense but I have cleaned hundreds of litter boxes (pet sitter) and have never seen a bag used with clumping litter.
Trying to learn something.

I used a litter box liner way back when I used the old regular litter; the liner was useful for easy dumping of all of the litter when changing/cleaning the box.

BUT, I switched to the scoopable type litter years ago and haven't bought a liner since. Smile

No reason to use them that I can see since I don't dump the litter anymore; I just scoop everyday and move the clean litter into another box when I scrub the boxes every 2-3 weeks.

Maybe I'm a "creature of habit"...because I use garbage bags to line the litterbox...even after switching over to the scoopable kind. I do change the entire thing every 4-5 weeks and pour all brand new in. Not really sure if I NEED to do that or not. I just feel like there are tiny "leftover" pieces that don't scoop up with the scooper (in other words, it filters right through) which makes me feel like the girls deserve a whole fresh box at some point. Wink

So I guess it just makes it easier to pick up the garbage sack...old litter and all and take it out to the garbage.

Just used to doing it that way~ Smile I tell people that there's the wrong way, the right way, and my way~ Big Grin Razz

I tried liners once. The lowest-ranking cat tried to dig to China and shredded the liner. Now I have a couple of spare boxes. When a box needs to be dumped and scrubbed I put the spare in its place.

I use scoopable, too. I bought a really cheap colander with relatively large holes. When the litter looks like it has lots of mini-clumps I pour it through that colander to remove them. That colandar is kept in the cats' bath room and will never go near food.

My lowest-ranking cat still digs to China, the box still gets caked with ick, and I still put the spare box in place while I'm washing the dirty one.

JoW, I also use a colander, since the litter we use is about a dollar a pound and we were changing it every week and a half I heard this somewhere and have beening using it ever since I think it works perfectly and no more waste

I'm not to proud to glom off another post!!! Have been a kitten owner for almost 2 months now. I also used a "liner" (tall kitchen trash bags) until June "dug to China" and totally made them worthless. Have a spare litter box for when others are getting a total clean out. Since she's small, it was recommended that I have 2 boxes. Have one under counter in main bathroom and other in family room. Over past week or so, she is showing definite signs of favoring the one in FR. She's only about 4 months old. Should I keep the second box filled or go to one?

Chairlady~ I think with one kitten that you could definitely just go with 1 L-box now~ Wink After removing the 2nd one, just be sure to physically take her to the one YOU want her to go to. Do this from different rooms of the house so that kitty gets the idea of where it's located.

PS...I have never considered using a colander! What a VERY clever idea!!! I love it...learning all the time~~ Wink

Well, to answer the question of why a liner...I always used one in the past so I just kept using one even with the scoopable litter. I get them at the $Store for $1/box so it's not like their expensive and for the once a month throw-away - it makes it easier to clean up... so for all you "to China" scratchers...maybe try what I do and maybe kitty will just dig part-way to China! ha ha

I remedied the whole "liner" question for me, I got an electric cat box, you know the one that automatically scoops after kitty has used it. It's wonderful and now the dogs have no buffet to wait on.

Interesting topic! My MIL was given a top of the line electric litter box by her other son who LOVES any and all gadgets (my DH's brother).

MIL is in her 80's, recently widowed, still active and lives in her own home with a "mature" cat she adopted from the local shelter after my FIL's passing.

She had been using a "scoopable litter box set-up" with no problems but didn't want to make DH's brother feel bad so she "pretends" to use it but really doesn't. Why? Because it takes too much room and maintenance vs. easy scooping with a long-handled scoop once or twice a day!
