Get Them To Use The "Doogie Door" !!! Sign In/Join

I have 2 Yorkies. They are 5 & 6 & very babied. I was tired of letting them in/out all day, so hubby installed a "doggie door". They refuse to go anywhere near it, & will whine & bark until they are let in. I have tried holding it open, pushing them in & out, bribing w/treats, etc. It has been a week. Any suggestions? Are they too old to learn this? Thx All Smile

Leave it either off, or supported (flipped up) and let them get used to going in and out on their own. Once they get used to that, then try the treats again with it flipped down...worked for us many times/many dogs.

YEARS ago, had a Rott and got several pet catalogs in the mail on a regular basis. Splurged on this doggie door that was an insert for a sliding glass door. Had a clear flap that would catch on magnets and a piece that could slide in to close it completely. It was spring-loaded to fit snuggly and was secured with a few screws. Went next-door to borrow a drill and teenage son quickly volunteered to help me. Dog was NOT impressed and we would made a killer youtube video tryiing to push a 90 lb baby in/out with NO success. Kid want ME to crawl thru to show her how it's done!?! Like THAT was gonna happen!! I ended up securing the flap out of the way with BIG hunks of duct tape... then went out into the yard without dog... she came thru the door within a short time.

Tho I was satisfied with the product, a few things to think about. One... do you have a lot of "critters" in your area?? Ya wouldn't want squirrels or raccoons coming in... and I'm SURE it wouldn't take them long to figure out door. Two, if "security" is a BIG concern... pet door for a BIG doog is an entrance most adults could fit thru.

The doggie door is the kind that fits onto a screen door, not into a wall or glass, so when the sliding glass door is closed, the doggie door is not accessible at night or when we r away. It fits small dogs, so no one could crawl thru it. I will try securing it up somehow & matbe that would help teach them. Thx 4 the input !

My vet told me that his dog won't use the doggie door. He tried leaving it open and only succeeded in blowing his A/C unit!
