My little girl has cellular growths on her body. According to specialits, there is nothing that can be done about it (it's her age I was told) I just recently had to find another groomer that came recommended (the old one retired). I told the groomer twice about the growths and asked her to be careful not to cut them when grooming my dog. Guess what, she was at the new groomer yesterday and when I picket her up, a growth on her leg had been cut and was bleeding. I was very upset. Instead of being apologetic, the the lady tells me "you have to do something about this" switching the focus away from her injuring my dog toward me. Like I have not tried - gosh do I have tried. Then she had the nerve to charge me $75.00 for the grooming. I usually do not pay more than $50.00 around here. Of course, I will not take my dog back there. Any advice as to how to find a good groomer? I believe that I counted at least 12 dogs when I dropped my dog off in the morning. Is that too much for anyone to handle in a day? Is it all about money all the time?

I'm sorry that your dog was cut during the grooming.

Since it was the first time this new groomer handled your dog, perhaps it was just inevitable. Maybe the groom will get more familiar with handling the growth areas if he/she sees your dog more often.

The two things I would suggest are:
be present during the grooming to make him/her more careful and more aware of where all the growths are. however if your particular groomer has many dogs to handle, then he/she might be rushed and more likely to cause an accident.

the other suggestion is to groom your girl yourself.

we have two dogs and we do our own grooming.

Ask pupper's Vet for referral to a competent groomer.
If skin growths are an issue, request a puppy cut
Make appt & observe=evaluate groomers interaction with dog before leaving your lil girl at shop. schedule a specific pick up time.

this is a little off topic but would you mind sharing what the groomer does for $50 or $75?

I have never taken my dogs to a professional groomer so I am just curious.

The groomers basically perform the same services schampoo/dry, nails, ears, anal gland expression and cut. I pay extra for teeth brushing.

We pay $80 to groom our lab. She does a shampoo, major deshedding/brushing, nails . .. and I assume ears . . . but I never asked about ears. I don't think she expresses their glands.

My tiki-- was hurt by a groomer who is a traveling groomer--recommended. I heard tiki scream and ran out to the truck to get her. She start limping and I called the groomer - who denied hurting her. As time went by, she will sqeal if she bends her leg way a certain way. Hate that groomer who hurt my puppy.

My dogs have not been to a groomer since. Who knows what they do to your pups. I take care of it.

Well, to make matters worse. My dog had her annual physical today. The vet stated that her anal gland was full. Although I asked the groomer if it had been expressed and she stated "yes". Now I am so angry that I was ripped off and am considering asking for a refund. First they injure my dog, then the teeth had not been brushed as promised and now this. Someone talk me down please.

Just because the dog's anal gland was full FIVE days after it was groomed doesn't mean it wasn't done. It is supposed to "refill" as it is there to lubricate the dogs bowel movements.

I think I have been blessed with a great groomer for my pekes. Yoshi was a trying one for her b/c I think he would have bit her out of fear. I just told her to let him know that she was the boss and she said all she had to do when he would growl was to snap her finger at him and say no, well they have become very good friends and she was glad that I had told her up front on how he would try to over rule her, no problems even though he is a nervous dog but has calmed down so much in the last year. It seemed the more I took him around more people the more at ease he has become. Plus I do have them set up for a monthly grooming to keep them used to the process.

Gathering from past grooming, my dog's anal gland does not fill up in 5 days.

The anal glands fill and empty in between bowel movements. They are meant to work that way.

If they stay empty for five days then you have a different problem.

Unless you brush your dogs teeth everyday, its probably a waste of money if the groomer does it once and awhile. Groomers usually express the anal glands from the outside, so may not get all the stuff out. Get the vet to do it if they fill up often. Finding a good groomer to me is no different than finding someone who does your own hair. It took me several times to find one I liked for myself. I think I might try to groom her at home especially with all the bumps.

I've never known a groomer to brush a dogs teeth. That is something they expect you to do.

Suez,
My understanding is that anal glands do not have any special function. They're useless in the modern day pets. Sort of like an appendix in people. They stink. They can get infected if not emptied when too full. They fill up and empty most of the time when pooping.
One of my dogs had hers surgically removed. The glands became too much of a problem. She is so much happier and better without them. NO pooping problems.

Usually, it takes a bit longer than 5 days for the glands to fill. Good groomers are difficult to find. I know of some real horror stories. Some yell & hit the pets! Some aren't very hygenic. I groom my own. I don't do a great job. But at least they love it & don't get stressed.

Having 2 small dogs, one for 18 years gave me lots of anal gland experience. I learned to empty them. Mostly small dogs have anal gland problems.

Sugarbuggar,
I suggest if you're not squeemish have your vet teach you how to do it. You can be as gentle a you wish. All you need is rubber gloves & KY jelly. YOU know your pet. It's really a hassle to depend on others to do it every time your dog needs it done. You know they always show signs of distress on "Friday" night. The dogs are pretty miserable when they fill up...

I have had dogs all of my life and have never heard about emptying the anal gland. Nor has my vet ever discussed this issue with me. Is this something I should be concerned about? None of my pets have ever had an issue with going to the bathroom, so I guess that's a good thing. I have always groomed my own pets, except for one. He was a 130 lb.long haired lab shephard mix. Way too much puppy to wash in the tub, comb out, blow dry etc. So he went to the groomer, this was 15 years ago and we were charged $50, a visit, back then. (they charged extra for his "size". LOL ) We currently have a pug, who loves her baths in the kitchen sink. Big Grin
