Cats - After intestinal surgery (HELP) Sign In/Join

My 3 year old cat had intestinal surgery 12 days ago to remove a pony tail holder he ate. He seemed to do fine afterwards and got his stiches out 2 days ago and all seemed well. He was back to his playful self, and was eating and drinking fine.

Today, he has not been playful and has been sleeping most of the day. He made some really wierd meows earlier, just like he did when he was vomiting before. He has NOT vomited at all but he seems lethargic. I was able to get him to eat and drink but only if I brought the food/water to him.

We're worried and not sure if we need to call the vets tomorrow or not.

Is this normal? Any help?

it kind of sound like Feline Panleukopenia or Intussusception in your cat. I would call the vet and yell them what is going on.

I'm sorry I did not see your post until now. If it was one of my cats, I would take him/her to the vets IMMEDIATELY even if I had to go to the emergency after hours facility. Complications can arise after surgery (or it could be something new) that make it imperative to seek immediate medical assistance. I hope it is nothing major - please let us know.

Thanks. I took him to the emergency vets this morning after he still did not eat or drink or try to walk. They took x-rays and said everything with his surgery looks fine. He is dehydrated for some reason, has low blood pressure and low temperature.

They are giving him fluids and doing some blood work to see if he has an infection or something else.

Just wanted to give an update. Unfortunately, we had to have our wonderful 3 year old cat to sleep a little while ago.

His heart murmur that was mild since birth apparently was aggrevated when he got his stitches out. He was so scared that his heart was racing terribly and the vet thinks that a blood clot broke off and that's what killed him.

Oh, Forensicmom, I am so very sad to hear your news. Frown

Please don't second-guess yourself or think there was something else you could or might have done - there wasn't. Cry

You obviously took wonderful care of him, being very attentive (first with the initial problem and then with his reaction after the stitches were removed) but, sometimes, things far beyond our control happen. Please know that you did everything possible for him and that he knows that as well.

So very sorry for your loss. You did all the right things for him. Sometimes, things happen that are beyond our control. Don't second guess and blame yourself for his loss.

I'm just reading this now. I'm sorry for your loss. It sounds like you were a good human to him and even though his life was short, I'm sure it was sweet. Sometimes these things just happen. Forever young, little kitty.

Thanks so much for the kind words. Our family has taken this quite hard, especially my 3 young daughters. They all know that there was nothing we could do for him but we all miss him very much.

Everyone keeps asking if we're getting a new cat. We need some time to get over it before we can even think about a new one. BUT, I guarantee we will get a new one sometime in the future.

Yes, take your time. You and your daughters need time to grieve the loss of your special cat - they are not interchangeable and cannot be replaced.

But, it's odd. At times when I have lost one that was very special, it seemed as if a new one came into my life in a most unexpected way and time. I've always thought that the one I lost had "a paw" in sending the new one into my life. So, take your time remembering this one and know you are destined to have another one when the time is right.
