janie101carin terrier
I recently adopted a carin terrier. He's about 2yrs old and joins me and an 8yr old jack russell. The 2 dogs instantly bonded and get along great.I just love them both!I really think the new dog might have been abused. He cowers and is shy to the point I have to chase him to get him outside to pee. What can I do to help this problem? It is only in this situation that he acts like this.

propertylady57janie, I haven't been on here for a while and I noticed no one replied to your post. If I were you I would put a leash on the dog and walk the dog out the door without making any fuss at all. Don't call the dog or talk to the dog, you walk out the door first then let the dog follow you.
If you make a fuss over the dog you might just make his problems worst. You should also walk both dogs each day together, give them exercise and it also bonds them to you. Good luck.

Idaho ResidentPropertylady57, Thanks for calling attention to this thread and glad to see you back!

janie, I'm sorry that no one responded earlier - hope you are still here.
Although I mostly have cats now days (and horses), I was raised with many, many dogs and I echo PL's suggestion to put a leash on him and then take him out ~ preferably with your 8 yr old Jack Russell on a leash as well (just for show) so he knows that going outside doesn't mean "kicked outside, never to come back into a warm home again."
I say that because you suspect he was abused - maybe being put outside was "being put outside for good in his mind." Hard to know how an abused dog thinks but I really think it might have been something similar in his past that causes him to be reluctant to leave your home.
That's the good news ~ he loves his new home ~ but also the bad news that he is afraid to leave it for fear that it will disappear. Sorry it has taken so long for you to get some responses ~ how are things going today since it's 5 months? And, thank you for rescuing this dog! Bet he is a beloved family member now.

Sis2I haven't been on here for a long time and am really sorry you're having trouble with your Cairn. I have one and she's one of the easiest dogs I've ever had. Loves everyone and everything except rabbits, squirrels and bats.
I suspect you're right about the abuse. Try the leash thing and see if that doesn't work. They're almost perfect pets.
