Hello everyone I need your help. I would like to build a dog gate for Andy (my dog). The area I want to block off is 80" inches wide (baseboard to baseboard).
I thought about buying a vinyl fence panel and cutting it in half (40 inches) so both gates would swing open when not in use. The area is just for the times that I am away from home for more than an hour so he will have room to roam but still be contained. Anyone know if this will work or have any other suggestions? Thanks |

We have a "kid to kid" store (gently used and baby gates, etc.) and my DD spoted this metal gate - lift door - step in. No installation.
I think buying ready made sometimes is cheaper, not always. Forget what I paid. Once I was looking at Ebay. Have you checked there? |

80 inches? that is nearly 7 feet! The wrought iron double gate between my house & garage spans 7 feet. For stability posts were cemented in & the gate opening is secured via a strudy peg at the bottom and a locking latch at the top. IMHO, regardless of Andy's size, your only option is to reconsider where & how he can be confined. IF only for a few hours, I suggest using a crate or confine him to one room This message has been edited. Last edited by: tessa89, |

Wow! I was tired when I replied and 80" did not register. Crate is good idea.
You didn't mention size of dog. I have that wire fencing across side of house to keep them from going to front gate and barking. I can stepped over it. I don't let doxies run house as they like to pee. I was thinking if I could put something across living room area, they could run around on tile...How about those folding gates - maybe two - secure a board to each side of wall and then a folding gate each side? |

I had a similar issue-needed to confine my dogs to the kitchen but also give them access to the doggie door. I purchased a metal fence(sort of) at PetSmart or one of those pet stores. It is made of metal panels that are attached and fold up to just the size of one of the panels. All the panels were originally attached to make a large circle. But it was easily modified to form a long barrier. It works perfectly for my needs and was not super expensive (for me money well spent). I needed between 7 or 8 feet and it is much longer than that.

Andy is small about 6 pounds - a chihuahua mix. My concern is that he will chew through a thin gate material or if it isn't at least three feet high he will jump it.
It amazes me how high he can jump. Sometimes I think he is part cat. He loves to lie on the back of the sofa (reminds me of when we had cats). Was looking for something nice to look at but not cost me alot of money. (I don't want much-lol) |

I'd confine Andy to a smaller room.
I had a friend who had a Borzoi....he put a pole about 6" off the ground across a large doorway opening in his house. Borzois are huge, tall dogs....that durn dog would NOT step over that bar!! Isn't that wild? |

The panels on the fence/gate that I have are just like the sides/roof on a metal dog crate; very sturdy. They have different heights. I opted for the 30" because my minpin can jump pretty high. She stays put now. I do think she could "climb" out if she really wanted to, but I am not going to tell her. LOL!
PS-my minpin lies on the back of the sofa too (when she is not in my lap)! Maybe it is a small dog thing. CMM - love that story...wish it was that easy with my minpin! LOL |

when my dogs were puppies, I used a configurable baby gate like the one here http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8457890. I have two gates that I link together.
it also comes with extension pieces. if you buy used - they are easy to find. I got both of mine off craigslist. |

I got this to keep my puppers in my den. The doorway is 90 inches wide here and we got extensions for it.

Sheltie that looks like the one I have, but this pup is tiny. The one at WalMart looks good and not to expensive. Good luck with that 5 pounder.

doxie the size of the dog is not the issue here...the door width is. THat was why I suggested this one because it can work on a 80 inch wide door. Most sold at place like walmart are so much smaller. That is the issue

Thanks for all the ideas.
I finally decided on two baby gates. Hooked one side of each gate to a 2x2 anchored to wall then just put a latch in the middle where both gates met so I could swing open and out of the way when not needed. I was actually amazed that Andy does not jump on the gate or try to chew through it. When I place him in the gated area he behaves himself (Well maybe a little whining and barking) but he is getting the hang of it |

I think tessa is thinking of an ex pen. It is made up of panels that can be put in different configurations.

I just bought one at Toys are Us this week end for my little baby pugs. It's awesome and they run around inside it. Less confining than the crate. I highly recommend it for your little one. |

Although I do not buy from Drs Foster & Smith, their latest catalogue lists an indoor "gate" that expands to 60 inches.
