Hi, I have a friend who is looking for the name of this quilt pattern, does anyone know it?

You know the smaller blazing star like quilt, that's made with 1 strip set, kinda like a 4-patch cut on an angle?...one color is the same as the setting squares, triangles, so those pieces kinda disappear. It's one of the first patterns I put on my 'to do' list.
We're traveling and I'm not sure where to find, but will come back later in case no one else has come up with a pattern for you.

No idea what the pattern is, but it sure is pretty and I love those colors. I'll be looking forward to seeing the name of the pattern, too.

Trish...I believe that is a version of the older block called The Rolling Star aka 8 pointed star. It all depends on how many fabrics are used to get so many different looks. I have an older book titled 101 Patchwork Blocks by Ruby Mc Kim that also shows it as a Rolling Star,,,,Is the block about 21 inches in size.

I think they just used the connecting blocks of your Carpenter's Wheel for the quilt you pictured.

Not sure May, was asking for a friend, maybe I can get her to measure it and Hopefully trty to figure it out...cause I do believe I've fallen in love with it myself and would love to do a 2 color one...in red and white or maybe blue and yellow. I'll be back in a bit with her reply.

I just got a response, sounds odd for the size, she will get back to me later...but she said as best as she could tell the blocks were 16" x 14.5"??

ok...the last response was 14" x 14 " finished from middle to middle of the burgundy block. They would like to replicate the pattern, so wanted to know the name so they could purchase or goggle the pattern.

I think quilting wifey is right and so were you on the Carpenters wheel and so was I...It is all about the placement of the fabric. If you look at the one you found and look at the picture on the left the connecting block is just like the subject quilt only the HST is turned and spaced every other one..
A lot of quilters can draft that block if it is in front of them.I'm a visual learner so if I had the quilt I could figure it out.

Martha can probably figure out that block...she is excellent at it. I can not by this picture.Sorry I can't be of more help.

May, thank you, it is great to have more than one set of eyes to tryand figure it out, and you were all a help Thanks...I am like you, if I had it to look at I could probably draft it. as it is I'm still a littlestumped, but haven't given up...perhaps Bozie will come along and have a look...

I know that I have seen this pattern before, but just can't put my finger on just where. I am thinking that it may be an old Mountain Mist patten, or maybe I saw it in an old Better Homes and Gardens Quilt book (from the early '80's) Will keep trying to remember. Sorry not to be more help.

Thanks for the votes of confidence. Unfortunately I don't have a name for the design. It's hard to see the exact sizes in the photo but I think it probably is something like this???

That was drawn using 18" blocks and 6" wide sashes. That makes the angles in the sashes less than 45 degrees so they should probably be wider but the drawing at least given an idea of the overall design. Here it is again with the blocks outlined.

You are so very clever Bozie... I love that you added the blocks, so I could get a better look...love it!!! Thank you so much...I've googled till my brain hurts...ran upon a few Double Dutch Rose, Evening Stars, Rolling Stars, that all came kinda close, but not quite, so you have just amazed me once again!

It would have been nice if my friend had a pic of the quilting hanging up for a better visual.

I'd love to do a queen size.

Bozie, that's exactly what the block looked like to me, too! Couldn't quite make out the sashing, but I thought it looked like it might have been constucted of the strip sets made just like the stars.
KS, I think my "to do" was simply called eight pointed star. Mine will be scrappy too, but floating on a common background & no sashing.

Laura Nownes makes a strip pieced lone star, blazing star or whatever you want to call it w/7 or 8 piece strip sets. Once you learn the technique, you can make any size & any name. I'm sure other designers have similiar stars.

Was just playing with the design some more. Keeping the blocks at 18" and increasing the sashes to 9" gives 45 degree angles for the diamonds in the sashes. I think that looks pretty much like the quilt in the picture.

Let me know if you want some rotary cutting instructions. I took out the patch outlines to give a better idea of the design but can easily put them back in. This drawing shows all of the patch outlines with 18" blocks and 9" sashes.

Karen, I agree that strip piecing would be the easiest way to do something like this. Not that I am about to attempt it!

that last diagram looks great. What would it be like if you divided the sashings in half to attach to the blocks and cut down on the pieces needed to connect the blocks. So each block would already have the sashing design added?

I can post EQ rotary cutting instructions.

Editing to say I forgot to mention the cornerstones. They would be would be 9" so cut 9.5" squares.

And then Quilting wifey's suggestion - a 27" block with half sashes attached plus triangles of background to fill the empty spaces. Again this will take two posts.

Editing say that I omitted the line between patches F and D in the drawing in my earlier post. Because of that EQ wasn't able to calculate instructions for those two patches since it was an irregularly shaped area.

I see that the numbers are pretty small on these. Have to go now but will check back later to see if you all need them to be larger or if you can make them out.

FFG, I practice a lot. And still screw up sometimes - obviously looking at the corrections I just had to make in three of my earlier posts!

I'm thinking about trying out one of these blocks when I get home, using 2 or 2 1/2" strips.

May...if I was in the states I'd be knocking on your door at dinner time...me and my gran would always go looking for dryland fish as we called them in KY...I love them, they are a true delicacy...yum...yum...we always found them by the dozens around walnut trees...my mouth is watering just thinking about them...sheesh I love them and fried green maters too!
