Doesn't sound good for the east coast for the next few days. Keep safe and keep us informed when you can how you're faring. Think there's also a big storm coming across the northern states, so hope you're all doing ok.

They keep changing what we're going to get, will depend on the paths of "Sandy" and the mid-state storm and when/if they will combine.

I have water and prepackaged foods so if the power goes out we should be good. What I haven't figured out yet is how to get the dogs to go outside when the weather is nasty...Batteries might have been a good idea. Hopefully it'll all be for naught.

Got the generator (two flat tires-ugh!) out and started right up. Got the snowblower out and about 30 gallons of gas. Went grocery shopping, got logs for the outdoor cooker, plenty of water and food (oh, and batteries!).

While we won't be in the thick of things, heavy rain and loss of power will leave to flooding in our basement. Better to be prepared that to chance it.

Here's hoping the rest of the east coast will be as 'fortunate' as Florida. Heard the storm stayed way off coast, winds and rains but no damage.

Will be thinking of all you East Coasters.

Getting prepared by shopping and shutting up the pool and furniture. Batteries and food purchased plus extra water. We're hoping it turns a different way! Stay well everyone.

I did laundry last night and this morning. Going to spend the evening ironing. I might be frizzy at work next week, but at least I won't be wrinkled.

Hoping to pick up a generator tomorrow. Putting the pump in the basement tomorrow too. Worried about losing power and all the wind. We have lots of trees in our front yard. Going to the store over the wkend to pick up some stuff we might need. It's not suppose to hit here till monday. More worried about my daughter and granddaughter who are in FLA and leaving tomorrow to drive home to PA. Hoping and praying they have a safe trip home.

I filled up my car gas tank today, did laundry, bought batteries and food, and checked the sump pump. I also bought ice and am planning on cooking some of the food that is in my freezer.
I don't have a a generator, so I just hope for the best.

I lost a freezer full of food twice last year, I sure hope it doesn't happen again.

Wishing everyone will be safe and sound.

We will fill up the truck tomorrow and take in the outdoor furniture at the lake and put the extension on the sump pump discharge. Put the ladders at the house under the barn, start up the generator, fill up empty coffee cans with water and freeze, catch up on laundry and get my "never-to-be-finished" cathedral windows project out in case we lose power. My dad is all set and told him to charge his cell phone Sunday, depending on what the latest is on the storm.

There is good advice in this topic!

My pre-storm list always includes laundry, phone charging, food cooking (so we can eat cold leftover meat), and ice making. I also like to clean the house, because I may not be able to vacuum later, and it's no fun to clean in the dark. DH handles generator gas, kerosene, and battening outside hatches (trash cans & furniture).

Try not to sleep upstairs if you have trees. Sleep in the lower level of the house instead, if you can. My friends had an oak split their house in half one night during a hurricane, starting with the upstairs bedrooms. Eek

Please be careful with candles. Battery-powered lanterns are much safer. I have outdoor solar lights that I use inside as night lights during power outages. I don't stick them in the ground outside (I keep them on the porch), so they're clean. I use them to line the stairs inside, like airport runway lights. Turn the lights upside-down & pop off the stake, so they sit level. Those battery-powered Christmas window candles make great night-lights, too.

Stay safe!

We're good - we have a whole-house generator that automatically kicks in if the power goes out. We built our workshop/poolhouse to hurricane code (withstand winds up to 200 mph), so if it gets serious, that's where we'll be. Having a Halloween party tonight for a dozen friends - thought about cancelling, but everyone said "NO!", so it's still on. Sunday & Monday look like the worst days for Tidewater.
Be safe, y'all!

Storm Schmorm Big Grin We planned for Irene by buying doritos and milk duds. Barely even noticed her go by.. tho we did lose a tree down the block. My plans for Sandy are to volunteer at the Sean Casey Animal Rescue block party on Sunday (12-5 in Windsor Terrace if anyone wants to drop by lol) and then to go to the gym Monday, and work on some retreat stuff Big Grin

Hope everyone else stays safe and dry! Smile

PS the cat in my avatar is named Callie, and she needs a new home. She is 11 but very sweet - if a little reserved. If anyone wants to adopt her I will bring her to you, as long as I can stay the night if its like a 12 hr bus or train ride Smile Her shelter name is Pong Hua but she's been renamed by a couple of the board ladies, coz Callie is so much prettier!

Stay safe everyone. Here in Central FL we have clouds and breeze/wind. We were scheduled to have a tree removed today but they put it off due to the wind.

We will look forward to folks checking in and letting us know how you are doing.

We charged up the boat battery so we can use that with an inverter to watch TV on a little black & white and digital converter if we get really bored.
Remember to check your prescriptions too, wouldn't want you to run out of needed meds. I ran through my dad's to make sure.

It's looking worse and worse - but who knows - our area is mostly Monday and Tuesday in the problem area.. so will wait til tomorrow to see if I need to fill the bath tub and lots of pans with water. Have several containers of water in the freezer so that will help keep things cool for a short period of time anyway when electricity goes out.

No generator here - but lots of batteries for candles, radios, flashlights, and maybe the DVD player; gas grill for cooking if desired.

Don't know if I can hand sew with a flash light, but have the Sylvia's Quilt to hand finish. Off to do laundry, pick up outside, etc.

Everyone stay safe... been so watching the east coast, hadn't heard the news on the Tsunami and earthquake. Geez - everyone take care.

OTT LIGHTS! If you ever can't find flashlights on store shelves before a storm, head to JoAnn's to see if they have the battery-powered Ott lights! I can read or hand sew in a power outage with one of those. They come both clip-on and free-standing and take AAA batteries, which usually aren't stripped from store shelves first the way D batteries are.

Another choice for emergency lights: Outdoor solar landscaping lights. They work GREAT inside! No batteries needed -- just recharge by day wherever there's outdoor light (window, porch, etc.) They won't give you enough light for sewing, but they'll keep you from falling down the stairs in the dark. I line 'em up like runway lights on my stairs. Most of the medium-sized ones will last all night.

I love the weather map. We're between get a boat and get a sled! It has rained all day so far, but no wind. The mountains will protect us until the snow starts. Then I just have to hope it stops in NE TN! The Smokies are supposed to get up to 5 inches, but none here in the valley. Stay safe all the rest of you. Thoughts and prayers coming your way.

So far things are not bad, we are suppose to get it tonight and Monday. Called my sister she lives in beach haven nj, said they have shelters set up but no dogs, she said she would not leave her furbaby, so she is going to stay put. I am so worried she is right on the water, she said the water is just 2 ft. from going over the bulk head so far. I told her I would drive down to pick her up, but she wants to stay there. She is 82 so she is not a young person. Guess all I can do is pray.....Be safe everyone! michele

Think I'll be fine- a little east of Albany, NY. Plenty of water, PB and J, dried fruit, and tuna. Stacked 1/2 cord of wood on the deck, hope to get the rest done tomorrow am. Gave up on the leaf cleanup since my riding mower just died. Gas tank is full, new wiper blades. Radio has fresh batteries, candles are set up. Knock wood- I'm next to a lake and never had major flooding issues. Plenty of paperbacks, and fabric is washed, waiting to be ironed and cut. I'm as ready as I can be, and hopefully will be able to just ride it out. I've got several treadles but never cleaned them up to use. May be a good project for during the storm. Stay safe Everyone! Don't go out unless you have to!!!!!
