I have some jeans I can send them, I don't like making quilts with them so I'll be happy to send them what I have for their stash to make more for an excellent cause. Great idea. Every soldier needs to know we care.
Great idea Quiltnanny...I'll contact them next week and see if they would be interested. I was surprised they use denim...that's hard on the machine and the sewer both!

What a wonderful idea! I like the purpose for the quilt and love the prayer pocket with notes of encouragement with a Bible. What a wonderful outreach of love and support!
Maybe you could find out what size squares they use. It would probably be cheaper to mail squares than whole jeans and one step would already be done for them.
In order to see the rainbow, first you must endure the rain.
I called the chu rch today and talked to one of the quilters. They use 7 inch squares of denim. The only thing they asked was that the jeans not be heavily stained. The lady I spoke with said she personally liked to use jeans that looked like they'd been worn and used. I think what she meant was the kind of stains we would see around here from guys working in the oil field.
The idea to send squares was great...it'll save us on postage and save the quilters time in cutting up the jeans.
Do we want to send as a group like we did for the quilters in NV or do we just want to send as we can? I'm flexible.
Here is the address:

What a fun project.. isn't it a joy seeing allthe love and support that goes into encouraging our service people? And a note and a Bible - what a good idea..yes they can get them from their chaplains.. but sometimes they don't ask, and sometimes don't know they want one.. those who don't can give them away - like to the chaplain. I see nothing wrong with those receiving getting an unsolicited quilt and bible. "No thank you" is still an acceptable response - to either gift.
Anyone up for a road trip? They are about 4 hours from me and I know some other ladies that live close that may want to ride up. If we wanted to do a coordinated effort, we could plan a mailing date for arrival to coincide with an in person visit! I know that gas is pricey, but it would be worth it to see the look on everyone's faces in person.
Let me know what you think and I'll be pulling out the old jeans that I have been saving. They would probably also appreciate any donation of denim needles--they certainly help on a project like this.
Oh Lisa what a good idea.. as soon as I see t is is coming together I will send somne denim needles to you, no old jeans at my house! .. what a thoughtful idea!
I wonder if there's any way they'd use another size block. I have piles of 6" blocks already cut. Would they take them sewn together if they were the right size? OHG, how did you contact them by phone? ~karen
Lisa...that's a great idea! I live less than 2 hours from them and I'm always up for a road trip! I was pretty vague to the lady I spoke with about who might be sending stuff...in case we wanted to do a group project and surprise them. The needles would be a big help. Sewing denim is mur der!
Wildcatmom, I don't know if they would take 6" squares or not, but they might if they had enough for a whole quilt. Here is the church's website. That's where I found their phone #. I specifically called today because they work on the quilts on Thursday. The lady I talked with did not tell me her name, but she was one of the quilters.
Sounds like we might want to do a group effort here. Anybody have a suggestion for a mailing date? Would it be better to mail to one of us who live in East Texas and then anyone who wants to go with us can help deliver them? I'd be glad to be a denim delivery elf if that's what we decide.

i didn't see the news item.. but I suspect these denim quilts are raggedy quilts and are probaly back blocked with flannel.. perhaps we need to know if there is any other need???? Doesn't mean we can fill it, but maybe make it known.. just an idea.
What a heart-warming story. I have been thinking lately that there must be something I could do for the wounded soldiers that would let them know I care about them and am so thankful for their service to our country. And then tonight I read this thread here. I would be very willing to donate denim jean pieces to this cause. I will be waiting for the particulars about this. Thank you so much for bringing it to our attention.

hmmm. I agree with Rho*. If they were only making quilts, I'd be happy to help out. They aren't, so I won't. Why would they assume that all quilt recipients are of the same faith and would appreciate the extra? Sorry, but that's a bit too arrogant for me.

Bumping back up. I'll be getting some squares together soon. They use 7" squares for anyone that wants to cut squares. They do have uses for scraps too.
Perhaps we should have a new thread for this round of "quilt angels".
I will pick up some pakgs of denim needles,,, sendme a PM with an address so I can get them out to you. This is really such a neat thing for you to do.. be sure to get a picture for while you are there City/Sandie
