Do any of you put borders on your string quilts? and, if you do, do you also put a foundation on them too so the weight is the same as the blocks? Anyone have any pics to share? i put borders on all my string quilts and nope... i don't put a foundation under the border.. and my quilter has no problem quilting them.. and i can't tell that it's different at all.. this is my "ocean" string quilt from one of the CYOC string swaps.. it's my favorite.. shey.. my blog.. http://sheysstitchinmagic.blogspot.com/ http://twistedstitchers-quiltingnewbie.blogspot.com/ "it's not the human walk.. it's the human race, if you ain't livin on the edge .. you're takin to much space..." I've done the same as Shey with no foundations under the borders. No problems quilting it. Have fun with your strings. ![]()

gorgeous quilts. I love string quilts.

Yes, these are gorgeous! I do love string quilts, too.
|

I've strung on paper & torn it off. I pick a day when I'm mad at the world for removing the paper.

Every quilt is done as a matter of taste, but I like to add borders. Since the string blocks are so busy, you really do need a place for the eye to rest, so all my string quilts have a solid or TOT 2" unfinished inner border and a 5" unfinished outer border. Like I said, it's a matter of preference!

I put borders on as well...no problems without anything extra. Here's a couple of samples from a couple of the swaps This was my first...
|
This is the last one...it has string blocks in the pieced border as well ![]()

Wow - those are so cool. I need to try one of those!

Thanks ladies! Love those quilts. I have a UFO Christmas string quilt all put together but did not know what to do next. I am going to put two borders on it. I will show it when I am done. This is a "Fun & Done" type quilt... Chris ![]()

girls...thanks SO much for posting the pix...I just LOVE string quilts. Lindaboomer...that yellow and black one is always a stunner...I may have to do one like this in the next swap if you don't mind that I copy...
|
Regarding borders or not, I do it both ways...just depends on the quilt. Typically I do like borders though, to contain all of the motion and activity within the quilt. ![]()
|
...a couple more... The little quilt on the left is now finished with a simple, narrow yellow binding and both quilts have embroidery floss tied in the centers of the blocks. ![]()

Love that black, white and yellow one, Linda. I have always thought it was so striking. When I first saw it, I found that print from the border and bought a good amount of it for my stash

That quilt resides in CA with my friend that was just diagnosed with cancer. Both of the ones shown are my favorites. I wish I would have purchased more of the line of fabric used on the border...I should go looking and see if I can find some. Axel - have fun with it - it certainly is happy.

I remember when royalboomer was making the black/white/yellow quilt and all the discussion here about borders on the quilt. I've never made a string quilt but this one is in my vast inspiration folder for the day when I finally do. Now I have a few more to add. ~karen

This is from a fall string block swap here several years ago. I used the trimmings from my own blocks for the outer borders, plus some black I had left over. ![]()

String blocks are so nice. Why do I not make one? Very pretty work, Ladies.
|
..this is my Christmas strings from a swap several years ago ... I used this one before the binding was done so you can see the pretty work my quilter did in the border. I cannot change 'things', but I can change how I feel about them. Me. Wounded Warrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org
