I made a small pressing mat for use on my kitchen counter when I am working on small pieces. I cut an empty fabric bolt 15 "long batting for padding and ticking for the cover.

Well my boo boo yesterday . . I used pins to hold the back of the ticking that I had wrapped on the board down, making sure the pins did not poke through. Have used this board many times but yesterday one of the pins came loose and pushed through just enough to do this damage to the soleplate of my favorite travel iron I take to retreat and classes. I ironed over the "bump" several times thinking it was a piece of bunched up fabric.

So this morning I hot glued the ticking to the back of the board.

Thank goodness Christmas is coming up, DH says "yep I can see what is on my Xmas list for you" woot! So I better get to shopping and give him some recommendations.

Any favorites, have not bought one in years. The Rowenta small iron seems to show up a lot at retreat.

I think you just voided the warranty.

I'm sorry that this happened to you, but I have to say, I'm glad to know that I'm not the only one who keeps doing something and not realizing that I shouldn't!

Years ago I had a picture on here...it was from when I was FM quilting and something didn't sound right. Instead of stopping, I kept sewing! I was quilting a zip lock bag to the back of my quilt!

Just wondering though, will the heat from the iron make the hot glue runny? Can't think of a better way to attach it, but wasn't sure about the hot glue either.

Well shoot! that's a bummer! I'm kind of wondering about that hot glue too...

Well bummer. At least DH is on board for the new one, but I think he ought to give it to you early, huh?

I thought about the hot glue and the hot iron. I used little dots on the back to hold the fabric in place. The fabric bolt board is pretty thick, then 2 layers of batting, then the ticking.

I did put the board on a piece of newspaper and press on the front of the board over where the glued edges were on the back, held the iron down for a few seconds and it did ok.

I hate it when I do this kind of thing but you guys make me feel "normal" (if there is such a thing lol) knowing you have done something yourself.

LOL willquiltforchocolate...at Fall Retreat one of the girls was over at her machine just sewing away on her tote bag. Pretty soon we heard "and I am done", brag and tell everyone. OOPS, somehow she had sewn part of the instuction page on the handle stitches that attach to the tote! Did we ever have a laugh but it was easy to fix thank goodness!

OUCH!! Hate to loose a good iron.

Use a square of plywood instead and use staples on the back to hold the padding and ticking secure. I have one of those with a piece of non-skid stuff I put down before the pressing mat. Works really good.

Oh Sherry what a great idea! I like the non skid tip, I know what I am making this coming week! Woot!

Oh...I am sorry your ruined Earl. Hope you find a decent replacement.

On Bonnie Hunter's quilt cam tonight she showed her small ironing surface. She has one of those June Taylor (?) ironing/cutting mats. She uses an old towel that she's sewn together like a pillowcase. She said that she's had the mat forever and it looks like new. She just washes the towel pillow case when it gets grungy. Just another possibility for you!

I use a wooden Tv tray that I just covered with a cut down to size ironing board cover. It goes whereever I go to sew. Great for paper piecing. I saw an iron at Johann's the other day for $199
I could see me ironing the wrong sticky side of interfacing with that pricy baby!

Ouch. i've read that some quilters have scrubbed the sole plate clean and used it that way. it's still a good iron. good luck.

native Texan ...... I am going to try that. The iron still works but looks ucky

It looks like you could peel the top part completely off and that would also remove the damaged part..have you tried it?

Downsouth....I am going to try this. I have been looking at replacements and am not ready to spend the ****** for one. Several months ago I found another travel iron at Goodwill for mere bucks and I so hope I can find another one.

Until then I am down to one, retreat is not until next April so I have some time
