We are right to keep our fabric scissors away from family members who want to use them for cutting other items.

I read that this morning. Always have had separate scissors for different jobs, just didn't know why and now I do! sandy

Oh yes, I read it. I too have always had separate scissors — courtesy of my mother who threatened us with serious bodily harm if we used her sewing scissors for ANYTHING besides fabric. She bought them when we lived in Germany in the '60's, and I have to admit they were the finest pair of scissors I've ever used.

I also saw that article this morning and thought about this board, seems there was a discussion about this not too long ago on here.

I've known this since I took high school home economics. I also learned this in cosmotology school. Every type of scissor has it's own purpose and should never be used for any other purpose. But keeping them away from others is a problem.

My fabric scissors are marked FABRIC in permanent marker & my craft scissors are marked CRAFT. Woe to the person who goes near my fabric & craft scissors, let alone tries to mix up their uses! Mad

I saw a picture somewhere of a U shaped lock being put through both handles of a pair of scissors! Knowing me, I would lose the key though.

needlecrazy, I have a set of scissors from Germany. I believe they are Zwilling/JA Henckels and have gold colored handles.

I knew that, too. My sewing room, supplies, etc. have always been off limits.

My dad screamed (did some tailoring), my mom screamed, and I have screamed at the "don't use the fabric scissors for paper!!!" One friend just grabbed my best scissors and cut plastic right in front of me and I made her buy me a new pair. never were the same. Even worse are calligraphy utensils...they get callibrated for one person's use...and one that perfect edge is gone, it's all over. Blood pressure rising...must go pet cat.....

I'm left-handed so no one borrows my calligraphy pens or the left-handed shears.

When I found my DH going to cut a wire with my good scissors I almost hemmoraged!! He did not see what the big desl was until I told him those were $100.00 scissors. Then he thought I was crazy to have spent that much $ on a pair of scissors. He hasn't touched my sewing stuff since.....At least I've never seen him do so.

My kids knew not to touch my scissors. The rule was "Don't use the orange scissors". It is so ingrained in DD#1's mind that when someone at work was putting together a scrapbook basket she said "The orange scissors are for fabric only". Someone else even made the same remark. But the scissors ended up in the basket anyway.

When I had my first sewing class in 7th grade, one of the first things the teacher said was that sewing scissors are for fabric and sewing only .. never cut paper with these scissors other than patterns and fabric. Those are words of wisdom that I have shared with my family to the point that my sewing scissors are "put away" and not handy for anyone to get to.

Christopher and I had a big arguement about this before Christmas! He tried to cut tags off something with my fabric scissors and I had a fit and told him to go find the utility scissors. He told me, "You're ridiculous! Scissors are scissors!"

I pasted this link to him. LOL

He said, "Yeah right, she probably owns stock in a scissors factory."

DH knows not to use my scissors. I keep them hid from the kids. I keep all kinds of scissors in an old cookie jar in the kitchen and the kids all know where they are so they dont have to go looking for scissors.

DH teases me sometime by asking me where my 4" gingher scissors are. He tells me he wants to trim his nose and ear hair. I tell him to go visit his barber!!!!!!

Dear Mom used my rotary cutter (without a ruler) to cut wrapping paper. It's not as bad as fabric shears, since the blade gets replaced. However, I still asked her to stop and brought her a pair or paper cutting scissors.
Rotary mat is still wavy since Step-mom thought she could iron on it. Eye roll. Even after I told her it wasn't for ironing but for cutting, she still argued with me even though she doesn't see or quilt.
